Box Score 2 Auburndale, FL - The UMPI Owls finished their Southern Spring Trip on a high note with a 13 to 9 win over Colby-Sawyer at Lake Myrtle Park Complex in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader. The Owls finished the week with a (2-7) record but saw many positives in the early season games losing one game in extra innings and losing late in the 8th inning to powerhosue Brockport 4 to 2.
Game 1 (10-5 Colby-Sawyer)
How it happened:
The Owls hurt themselves in the opening game of the doubleheader allowing 6 unearned runs on 5 errors in a 10 to 5 loss. Bailey Corley (0-1) hurled a solid game for UMPI. Down 4 to 0 in the bottom of the 3rd inning, UMPI scored 3 runs as Joey Lippo singled down the right field line scoring Ricky Goupille. Joey Blake reached on an error by the Chargers catcher before a single by Timmy Burns. Nate Church (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) brought in 2 runs with a sharp single to centerfield. Colby-Sawyer scored 4 runs in the 4th inning and 2 runs in the 6th inning, 5 of which were unearned. In the bottom of the 6th, the Owls closed the gap on a RBI infield groundout by Burns and a RBI double to right-center by Moreno.
UMPI now stands at (2-9) on the season and will play 4 games at Fisher College in Massachusetts next weekend,
Game 2 (13-9 UMPI)
How it happened:
UMPI jumped on Colby-Sawyer starter Kam Lovelette in the top of the 1st inning when Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA) led off the game with a single, followed by a Joey Blake walk. Tim Burns was hit by a pitch to load up the bases and clean-up hitter Jacob Moreno (Bouurne, MA) ripped a deep shot to right centerfield which was caught in the gap but plated Lippo for the games 1st run. Nate Church was then hit by a pitch to load the bases again for the Owls. Bailey Corley reached on an outfield error scoring Blake. Tanner Veilleux (Belfast, ME) reached on a fielder's choice as the Chargers cut a runner down at the plate. With 2 outs Ricky Goupille (Presque Isle, ME) lashed a single to score Church for the early 3 to 0 lead. Colby-Sawyer came back with 1 run in the bottom of the 1st on a single by Ben Mensch.
UMPI carried a 4 to 2 lead into the 5th inning before a barrage of runs came across the plate for both teams. Goupille walked with the bases loaded as Moreno crossed the plate. Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) lined a hard single to rightfield scoring Bailey Corley Lake Stevens, WA) followed by a RBI fielder's choice from Joey Lippo. Joey Blake (Standardsville, VA) reached on another fielder's choice plating Ricky Goupille. Tim Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL) capped off the inning with a 2 RBI single to left field bringing in Lippo and Jones and giving UMPI a 10 to 2 lead. The Chargers came back with 7 runs to finish off a wild 5th inning as the Owls had 2 errors and Colby-Sawyer was also on the receiving end of 2 walks and a hit batter along with 4 singles to get within 1 run 10 to 9.
UMPI added 3 important insurance runs in the 6th inning. With 1 out Goupille worked a walk, Jones slapped a single to left field and Lippo loaded the bases on a walk. Joey Blake had a 2 RBI single and Lippo ended upscoring the inning's 3rd run on a wild pitch. Relief pitcher Jordan Young (1-0) (Graham, NC) came in for starter Steed Outler (Flower Mound, TX) with 2 out in the 5th inning and closed the door on the Chargers in the 6th and 7th innings to help preserve the win for the Owls.
