Owls Sweep Mustangs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (12-25) swept Central Maine Community College (0-17) in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Presque Isle.  The Owls blanked the Mustangs 6-0 in the first game, before taking the second game by a score of 7-2.

Game 1 – UMPI def. CMCC – 6-0

On senior day it was Andrew Bartlett (SR, Damariscotta, ME) taking the ball and pitching a complete game shutout in game one.  Bartlett would scatter five hits, strike out six, and walk no one, dominating the Mustang offense at times for his third win of the season.

The Owls would tally runs in the third, and it was another senior Tommy Collins (Pembroke, ME) that would get things going, leading the inning off with a single.  Matt Cauchon (SO, Kingston, MA) would follow that with a single of his own to set the table.  Senior Brady Rowe (Halifax, NS) would be credited with the first RBI of the game, driving in Collins.  Matt Curry (SO, Caribou, ME) would lift a sacrifice fly to center to score Cauchon in the inning.

Bartlett would add to the lead with an RBI double in the fourth.  The Owls kept things going in the fifth when Curry would score on a single and an error off the bat of Adam Begos (SR, Westbrook, ME).  After a Ryan Sanderson (FR, Cow Bay, NS), Begos would score on a wild pitch.  Curry would add another sacrifice fly to score Collins in the sixth.

Collins would go two for three in the game with a double and two runs scored.  Sanderson would also end two for three with a double and a run scored.

Game 2 – UMPI def. CMCC – 7-2

The Owls would get their offense going in the bottom of the first with four consecutive hits.  Cauchon and Rowe would hit back-to-back singles before Curry would double to drive in the first run of the game.  Begos would plate another run giving UMPI a two run lead.

The Mustangs would answer back in the top of the second.  Alec Collins (JR, Lewiston, ME) and Tyler Lawrence (FR, Madison, ME) would lead off the inning with back-to-back singles.  They would both score on ground balls to the shortstop, tying the game at two.

The game would remain deadlocked until the fourth.  The Owls would load the bases and a two-out error off the bat of Cauchon would finally break the tie and give UMPI a 3-2 lead.  The Owls would extend their lead in the fifth when Curry would lead off the inning with a double, and Begos would be hit by a pitch, followed by Bartlett drawing a walk.  Jacob Powell (FR, Frankfort, ME) would drive in a run with a sacrifice fly to right.  Jesus Garcia (SO, Jewett City, CT) would knock in another run with an RBI single, but the Owls would leave the bases loaded with a 5-2 lead.

UMPI would add insurance runs in the sixth.  Curry would drive in Rowe, who led off the inning with a single.  Begos would walk and come around to score on a wild pitch to plate the seventh run for the Owls on the day.

Tommy Collins would get his first career win on the mound, starting and going four innings, giving up just one earned run and striking out four.  Tyler McLaughlin (SO, Fremont, CA) would earn the save in three innings of work.  McLaughlin would strike out eight of the nine batters he faced.

Begos was two for three with a double, an RBI, and a run scored in the night cap.  Curry would also finish the game two for three with a double, RBI, and run scored.

The Owls finish the regular season with a 12-25 mark.  UMPI Baseball has been invited to join the City Universities of New York Athletic Conference as an Associate Member for baseball only.  The Owls will compete in the CUNYAC Conference Tournament next week in New York.  UMPI will be the #4 seed in the tournament and will play the #5 seeded Lehman College in an elimination game.  The winner of that game will advance to a double elimination style bracket to determine the conference tournament winner.
