UMPI Comes from Behind in Nightcap, Splits Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NORTHBOROUGH, MA – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (3-9) were able to bounce back after dropping the first game 5-1 to Anna Maria College (1-12) and win the night cap 10-9 in a wild, extra innings dual.

Game 1 – Anna Maria def. UMPI - 5-1

Callan Finn-McMahon (FR, West Hartford, CT) pitched a complete game and gave up just one run and four hits, baffling the Owls offense and leading the AMCats to their first win of the season.

The Owls lone run would come in the top of the third when Tommy Collins (SR, Pembroke, ME) led off with a single and stole second.  He would score on Brady Rowe's (SR, Halifax, NS) single through the right side of the infield.

Anna Maria would answer back in the bottom half.  James Marcello (JR, Mansfield, MA) would hit an RBI double and later score on a wild pitch to grab the lead for the home team.  He would add a sacrifice fly in the sixth to help seal the AMCat win.

Trevor Brown (SO, Gardner, MA) led the offensive attack, going two for three with a run scored.  Tanner Jakola (SO, Leominster, MA) would add two RBI.

Tyler McLaughlin (SO, Fremont, CA) struck out nine in five innings of work, but took the loss.

Game 2 – UMPI def. Anna Maria – 10-9 (9 Inn)

The Owls would find themselves down by five late in the second game before they would finally get on the board.  In the top of the sixth Jesus Garcia (SO, Jewett City, CT) would rip a single down the left field line to get on the board.  The AMCats would add an unearned in the bottom half, and the game would go to the last scheduled inning with Anna Maria up 6-2.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Rowe would walk, Matt Curry (SO, Caribou, ME) would single, setting the plate for the Owls.  An error would plate the first run of the inning and Solomon Fast (SO, Phillips, ME) would step up to the plate and rip a double to score Curry.  After a pop out, and the Owls down to their last out, a throwing error allowed two runs to cross the plate and UMPI would work out of a first and second jam in the bottom half to force extra innings.

In the eighth UMPI would draw four walks, a hit by pitch, and take advantage of a costly Anna Maria error to score three runs.  An Owl error would plate a run for the AMCats, and that would be followed by a sacrifice fly to pull Anna Maria to within one, with a runner on first.  Matt Elliot (FR, Attleboro, MA) would hit a ball that would one-hop the fence in right field, bringing the tying run.  Elliot would try and end the game when the throw trickled into foul territory, but relief pitcher Saul Nunez (SO, Mapleton, ME) would be in position to pick up the ball and throw Elliot out at home.

In the ninth, Matt Cauchon (SO, Kingston, MA) would walk with one out and steal second base.  Rowe's single would send him to third, and Curry hit what was a possible double play to second base, but the ball was bobbled allowing Cauchon to score.  Anna Maria would get out with no further damage, but the Owls once again had the lead.  Nunez would work out of trouble again in the ninth, and the Owls would split the doubleheader.

UMPI and Anna Maria continue their four game series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 10 AM at New England Baseball Complex.
