Advantage UMPI in 'Battle of the Birds'

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(NORTH ADAMS, MA)  --  A 2-run ninth inning by the University of Maine-Presque Isle baseball team in the nightcap of their doubleheader at Fisher College broke a 4-4 tie and led to the Owls sweeping the Falcons.  UMPI scored 4 runs in the final inning of game one leading to a 9-3 victory before the 6-4 come-from-behind win in game two.  With the wins, Presque Isle moves to 6-21 on the season.  The Falcons fall to 19-23.

Game #1:  UMPI 9, Fisher 3

In the opener, Dylan Worster (So./Howland, ME) threw a complete game 8-hitter to pick up his 3rd win of the season.  Worster gave up single runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th innings before shutting down the Falcons the rest of the way, fanning six.

Offensively the Owls were buoyed by a 5-run third inning.  Carlos Villoria's (Jr./Caracas, Venezuela) 2 RBI double was the big knock for the Owls in the frame.  It was the 13th and 14th RBI of the season for the big first baseman, leading the team in that category.

Still a ballgame in the 7th and clinging to a 5-3 lead, the Owls put the game out of reach with four insurance runs.  With one in, two out, and the bases loaded, 2B Justin Bergeron (So./Tiverton, RI) stepped to the plate and rapped a single to center scoring Villoria.  The bases would clear on the play after an error on the Falcons centerfielder allowed Lucas Malloy (So./Lovell, ME) and Stephen Thorne (So./Dalhousie, NB) to cross the plate as well.

Alex Csiernik (So./Hamilton, Ontario) led the UMPI 10-hit attack with a pair of singles.

Game #2:  UMPI 6, Fisher 2

In a bit of a sloppy nightcap the two teams combined for 5 errors (4 by UMPI) and 5 unearned runs.  Tied 4-4 in the 9th, 2B Cam Morrell's (So./Harpswell, ME) 1-out, double with the bases loaded gave the Owls the breathing room it needed to earn the 6-4 win.

Jake Fillebrown (Jr./Stoneham, ME) started and scattered 5 hits to pick up his first win of the season.  Fillebrown worked 8 innings and struck out 11, both season highs, while holding the Falcons to only 1 earned run.  Andy Brown (So./Princeton, ME) pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to pick up the save.

Leading 2-0 in the third inning, a pair of UMPI errors helped lead to a 3-run frame for the Falcons.  Presque Isle took the lead back in the top of the 4th with a pair of runs, capped by a Shane Smith (So./Farmington, ME) RBI sacrifice fly.

Another unearned run by Fisher in the 5th tied the game at 4-4 where things stayed until Morrell's heroics in the 9th.

Morrell, Jordan Duffy (Jr./Fort Augustus P.E.I., Canada), and Ted Walker (So./Caribou, ME) paced the UMPI offense with 2 hits apiece.
