Owls Have Tough Day in Virginia Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Hampton, VA - The UMaine-Presque Isle Baseball Team struuggled with the cold and rainy weather today in Hampton, Virginia but found the Apprentice School Builders (13-7) even more difficult to deal with then the elements. UMPI dropped both games of a doubleheader being no-hit in the 1st game and losing the nightcap 15 to 3.

In the 2nd game Apprentice School's Maxwell Burcham opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI single that scored Lou Picolo. The Builders would lead 1-0 after one inning, but that 1 run lead was very short lived as the Builders struck for 6 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Hunter Riss opened things up with a 2 run double that scored Thomas Packert and Jake Day. Later in the inning, Brent Byrum singled to score 2 more Builder runs. The strong Virginia team would add three more runs over the course of this game.

The Owls wouldn't get on the scoreboard until the top of the 6th inning when Colby Spencer (So. Swan Quarter, NC)) led off with a solid single up the middle. Brad Patterson (Jr. Harker Heights, TX) would rip a long double to right center scoring Spencer. Patterson would later score on an infield hit by Ryan Sanderson (Sr. Cow Bay, NS).

In the 7th inning leftfielder Ausin Coulston (So. BullHead City, AZ) led off with a double just inside the rigtfield line. Coulston would move to 3rd and scored on a double steal when Justin Mason (Sr. Stamford, CT) stole second base.

Luke Scankback (2-0) took the mound and pitched 5 innings for the winning team, giving up 2 hits and surrendering no runs on the day. Schanback struck out 6 batters in his five innings of work. Taylor Hampton and Luke Wells would pitch the 6th and 7th innings, striking out a combined 4 UMPI batters.
