Baseball Adds Nova Scotian Infielder

PRESQUE ISLE, MAINE –

Head Baseball Coach Tim Burns has stayed busy on the recruiting trail throughout this summer. Carter Murphy of Halifax, Nova Scotia will become the second Canadian player to join the roster for the upcoming 2026 season. Murphy plays U18 AAA travel ball in Nova Scotia and has been the starting shortstop of his team for three years running.

Murphy has been an all-around star, recently hitting .333 this past season with a 1.053 On Base Plus Slugging (OPS). He poses a serious power threat, with 11 big flys over the last two seasons.

"I've been fortunate to coach Carter for the past three summers. Carter has been our starting shortstop from the first day he joined our three-year program, moving in the batting order from seven to four, to eventually the three-spot where he remains to this day. Carter continues to impress me with his overall stellar attitude, coachability, hard work, commitment and respect for his teammates, coaches, officials and opponents. I'm sorry to see him leaving but wishing him all the best at his new program," Coach Dave Galloway said, having high praise for his shortstop.

Murphy will be a huge addition to UMPI's infield, providing depth at the shortstop position as their current all-conference starting shortstop and rising senior Garrett Chadwick was also a dominant starting pitcher last year. As for Murphy, he's just excited for the chance to play college ball.

"I am beyond excited to become an Owl. I'm thankful for this opportunity and will not let UMPI down," Murphy said.

Murphy will begin attending UMPI this fall and plans to study exercise science. UMPI welcomes him as the newest member of the Owls athletics family.
