If there was a ever a reason to believe in UMPI Gold as a NAC contender, Saturday's showing was a great example. UMPI finished Tied for second place between host school Husson on their home course. The Owls shot a 307, yet another record low in UMPI's NAC era as they continue on a trend no one's seen before from UMPI.
Freshman Lucas Tatryn showed again why he is the Owls number one with a season low score of a one over, 72. His round had its share of ups and downs however with a pair of double bogeys. He birdied the par five fourth hole but took a pair of eagles on the back nine. Most impressively so, Tataryn holed out from 88 yards to make an eagle on the 395 yard, par four 14th. He hit a wedge shot to the front of the green and let it roll in. He also made a great three on the par five 18th. After pounding a drive, he stuck his approach shot to six feet and made a sliding putt to finish his back nine one under. Tataryn finished Tied for fourth in the tournament with his score of 72, three strokes behind the winner Michael Bruce.
Luke Biedelman has consistently been playing great golf this year, finished with a 77 after a 40 on the front nine turned to a 37 on the back. He birdied three holes on the back as well, holes 10, 13, and 15. Matt Pelletier and Jaxson Sockbeson each posted 79s. Pelletier went 39 on the front and 40 on the back, and Sockbeson went 41 and 48 for his nine splits.
UMPI finished ahead of the likes of MMA, UMA, St. Joe's, UNE, and UMF, all schools with traditionally good golf programs making Saturday's round all the more important for setting themselves up for a NAC Championship bid which will be held on the same course in mid-October.
Next Up:
The Owls will look to continue their momentum into next weekend when they go back-to-back. They'll play in the UMF invitational on Saturday and the Colby Sid Farr Invitational on Sunday. Both rounds will take place at Augusta Country Club. After that, they compete in the Mariner Invitational at Augusta Country Club on Tuesday, making it the toughest test of the season for the Owls.
