The University of Maine at Presque Isle Track and Field teams finished their final team meets at the North Atlantic Conference Track & Field Championships held at UMaine-Orono. The Owls had a great weekend, setting a season high, 10 school records.
Men:
Joseph Tuulima took home first place in the discus event, setting both an UMPI school record and a North Atlantic Conference record with a throw of 41.36 meters. Tuulima beat out Alex Crews of Farmington who have been the two best throwers in the conference all year long. Tuulima narrowly missed a second title in shot put, finishing with a 14.01m mark, behind Crews; 14.91. Tuulima is headed to the DIII New England Regionals next weekend.
Jovain Barrett was excellent in the sprinting and jumps once again, finishing 5th in the 100 meter preliminaries with a time of 11.59 seconds, just a half second behind the winner. In the finals, Barrett finished 6th, and a tenth of a second slower. Barrett was also on the podium in the long jump, with a 6.27m mark that earned him 5th place. He had the same finish in the high jump with a 1.77m leap, a few inches behind the champion who leapt 1.87m.
Tariq Martin finished with silver in the men's high jump, leaping 1.82 meters, just two inches behind the champion.
The UMPI men finished with a team score of 46, beating out Lesley and VTSU-Johnson and earn fourth place in the conference.
Women:
The highest finish for the UMPI women came from Natalie Miranda in the 3000meter Steeplechase event. Miranda finished 4th with a time of 13:54.82. Miranda also helped the Owls in the 4x400 meter relay to a third place finish along with Maubi Mateo, Madison Bridges, and Taylor Marston.
In more running events, Maubi Mateo finished 6th in the 200 meters, with a time of 28.44, a second behind the winner. She was also top 10 in the 100 meters, finishing 9th with a time of 13.82 seconds.
Evelyn Elijah paced the Owls in the throwing events, finishing Top 10 in three events. She was 7th in discus with a 28.73m throw. In shot put, Elijah finished 8th with a throw of 9.66 meters, and in Javelin, she was 9th with a 25.65m mark.
The UMPI women finished in 5th place as a team, with a score of 12 points, beating out Lesley.
