UMPI Track & Field Sets Six School Records in Opening Weekend
WENHAM, MA | SPRINGFIELD, MA
The University of Maine at Presque Isle Track and Field teams began their 2026 schedule with back-to-back meets in Massachusetts. First they competed in the Jonathan Tymann Invitational hosted by Gordon College in Wenham, MA, then headed west to Springfield, where they competed in the Yellow Jacket Open, hosted by American International College (AIC) on Saturday. Jonathan Tymann Invitational – March 27th
Men:
Joseph Tuulima highlighted UMPI's day, taking home first place in the Men's Shot Put Invite event, with a winning mark of 13.27 meters. He was strong in all the other throwing events as well, helping UMPI's overall team score in everything he did.
On the track, Jovain Barrett helped pace the Owls with a 24.42 mark in the 200 meters, and also finished top ten in the long jump, placing 9th at 5.85m. Westley Dyer came through in the 400 meter hurdles event, placing 12th with a time of 1:05.94. Â
In the high jump, Micah Daigle and Tariq Martin finished 4th and 5th respectively.
Women:
In the 4x400 meter relay, the Owls set a school record with a time of 5:00.62. Maubi Mateo, Madison Bridges, Natalie Miranda, and Mia Gutierrez teamed up for the event.
Maubi Mateo was the Owls' top performer in a plethora of track events, with her highest mark being a 23rd place finish in the women's 200 meters thanks to a time of 29.43 seconds. She also finished 28th in the 100 meters, proving to be UMPI's top sprinter in their opening meet.
In the throwing events, Evelyn Elijah finished 10th in Discus with a throw of 26.48m. Taylor Marston just narrowly missed the top 10 with an 11th place finish in shot put thanks to a 6.94m throw.
Yellow Jacket Open – March 28th:
Men:
Joseph Tuulima was again UMPI's top performer. His highest finish was a third place finish in Shot put, as he topped the day prior's throw of 13.9 meters. With that throw he hit a provisional qualifying mark for DIII New England's. Tuulima also finished 8th in discus, with a mark of 37.85m, right behind teammate, Hayden Bay who was 7th with a 37.91m mark.
In the track events, Jovain Barrett and Micah Daigle tied for 8th place in the high jump, both leaping 1.7m.
In the long distance events, Kieran Everett and Isiah Mitchell finished 12th and 13th respectively, just six seconds behind each other in the 1500 meters. Westley Dyer finished 11th in the half-mile, with a time of 2:23.58. Aspen Mitchell was behind him in 14th place and a time of 2:32.74.
Women:
Evelyn Elijah was UMPI's top finisher for the second straight day, finishing 9th in discus with a throw of 27.23 meters. She was 11th in shot put with a 9.45m mark. Taylor Marston was also in the mix in discus, coming in 17th with a 21.13m mark, while Lauren Cooley placed 21st. Nevaeh Bello finished 22nd in shot put.
On the track, Maubi Mateo was UMPI's top finisher, coming in 19th in the 400 meters. Madison Bridges was next in that same event, coming in 25th.
