The UMPI Women's Basketball team took on Thomas College in a big NAC East matchup with playoff implications on the line. The Owls who are currently the first team out in the East, were trying to pull within half a game of the Terriers with a win. Ultimately, the Terriers played the long game and pulled away at the end of the third quarter and used that run to coast to the nine-point victory.
How it Happened:
The game got off to a very back and forth start with teams essentially trading baskets and free throws for the first quarter and a half. Tied at 21, the Owls made a mini run to go up by five. This lead would hold the rest of the second quarter as they went into the locker room with a three-point lead. They led by five again briefly in the third quarter, before the game was tied at 40 with 3 minutes left in the fourth. Thomas then went on the run that would prove to be the difference in the game. They closed out the third quarter on an 8-0 run. In the fourth, the Terriers were able to change their play style to milk some clock, and the Owls were unable to convert on many of their opportunities. Thomas was able to ice the game by killing time and at the free throw line. The final score ended up 62-53.
Top Performers:
UMPI was once again led by the scoring tandem of Alexis Ireland and Anaira Ayala. They each had 15 points, while Ireland also had 15 rebounds for yet another triple double. Jovanna Oliva added 10 rebounds, while Karen Marshall chipped in with 6 rebounds.
