PRESQUE ISLE, ME
The Owls wrapped up their second straight NAC home weekend as they hosted the back-to-back defending Conference Champion, Maine Maritime Academy Mariners. Although the game started slow with the Owls hanging around early, the balanced Mariners squad made it very tough for the Owls to score, while also getting a lot of players in the scorebook as they routed UMPI.
How it Happened:
As mentioned, the scoring began rather slowly. The Owls held the Mariners off from making a huge run in the first quarter as they kept the score within five points after one quarter, 12-7. In the second however, is when MMA started to heat up from the field. They shot 59% in the frame and knocked down three triples to help them out to a 35-18 lead going into the locker room. In the third, the lead continued to slowly grow for MMA as they continued to make shots, thanks in large part to Evelyn Dagan's five threes on the day. They entered the final quarter with a 56-32 lead, which was enough for the Mariners to coast to the eventual 73-41 victory.
Top Performers:
UMPI was led in scoring by Anaira Ayala who finished with 24 points and six rebounds—also enough to lead UMPI in that category. She made eight field goals on the day. Jovanna Oliva was the next closest with eight points.
Next Up:
The Owls will get some much-needed rest before gearing up for another NAC weekend when they host UMF on Friday night followed by Husson on Saturday afternoon.
