Owls Welcome Michaela Carney to Women's Soccer Team

Presque Isle, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) is thrilled to announce the addition of Michaela Carney to the women's soccer team for the upcoming season. A standout athlete from Ashland District School in Ashland, Maine, Michaela brings impressive credentials and a wealth of experience to the Owls.

Michaela, who plans to major in Criminal Justice at UMPI, has had an illustrious high school soccer career, demonstrating exceptional versatility and skill. Primarily playing as a goalie, center full, and sweeper, Michaela has been a defensive powerhouse and an offensive threat.

Her career statistics are a testament to her abilities: Michaela achieved 25 career shutouts, maintained a one-goal allowed average, and scored 10 goals in her senior season, culminating in 11 career goals. These accomplishments highlight her all-around contributions to her team, both in defense and attack.

Throughout her high school career, Michaela earned numerous accolades, including:
  • MVP in her junior (2022) and senior (2023) years
  • Selection to the All-Aroostook team in her senior year (2023)
  • Member of the All-Star Team in her senior year (2023)
  • Recipient of the prestigious Butch Shaw Award in her senior year (2023)
  • Team captain in her senior year (2023)
  • Division II runners-up in her freshman year (2020)
  • Northern Maine runners-up in her junior year (2022)
Peter Belskis, Michaela's high school coach, praised her adaptability and team-first attitude, stating, "She started out in goal for us but then midseason I switched her to the field to give us a strong midfield presence which made our team stronger. She accepted the new role because she is a team player. Not many players could go from playing three years of defense in goal and then midway through her senior year switch to the field and be as successful as she was. She was selected to the all regional class D All-Star team."

Coach John Ala of the UMPI women's soccer team expressed his excitement about Michaela joining the team, noting, "Michaela's versatility and strong defensive skills will be a tremendous asset to our team. Her ability to excel in multiple positions and her proven track record of leadership and performance make her an excellent addition to our program."

Michaela Carney is set to make a significant impact on the UMPI women's soccer team, and the university community eagerly anticipates her contributions both on and off the field.
