UMPI’s Late Rallies Come Up Just Shy as Burns Reaches Milestone

AUBURNDALE, FL – The Owls (0-3) faced off with the Principia College Panthers of Illinois (5-5) in a day/night doubleheader at the RussMatt Invitational. Both games saw the Owls falling just shy of comeback bids as Principia won Game 1 in walk-off fashion 6-5 while fending off UMPI 14-10 in the nightcap.

Game 1 (6-5 – Panthers):

How it happened:
For the second straight day, UMPI struggled in the first inning as Principia scored three. Also for the second straight day—UMPI responded. This time they tied the game in the next half. The Panthers would go up 5-3 with two more in the 2nd. The Owls came back to tie again it with runs in the 4th and 5th before the Panthers walked it off in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

On the mound:
Sophomore Garrett Chadwick made his first start of the season for the Owls. He would go 2.2 innings with five runs allowed, two of which were earned, and three strikeouts. In relief, Junior Spencer Harman became the hero for UMPI in this game. He went four innings with 1 earned run while fanning three and walking none.

At the plate:
The UMPI bats picked up where they left off the night before as they recorded 10 hits as a team. Grad student Timmy Burns went 3 for 4 with a double to lead the way. Senior Joey Lippo had two singles and two RBI. Grad student Payton Jones also had two singles and an RBI. Freshman Ben Speed recorded his first two career hits going 2-4, while senior Joey Blake carded an RBI on sac fly.

Game 2 (14-10 – Panthers):

How it happened:
In the nightcap, UMPI would continue to find the early innings to be a bugaboo as they found themselves down 12-0 after 2 and a half innings. They chipped away at the lead over the next few innings and were down 14-4 after 5 and a half. A huge sixth inning saw UMPI score 6 times coming back within 4. The Owls were able to load the bases in the last frame but could not plate any, falling 14-10 in the end.

On the mound:
Much like Harman in game one, senior Ian McCray became the hero in relief for UMPI by tossing five solid innings, surrending two runs while striking out four.

At the plate:
For the third time on this young season UMPI reached double digit hits as a team. Timmy Burns reached the career milestone of 100 hits in the 3rd inning with a backside single to right field. He finished 2-3 with two RBI. Joey Lippo had an astounding five RBI out of the lead off spot, accounting for half of the team's 10 runs. Junior Anthony Searels and senior Ricky Goupille stayed swinging the bats well, each recording 2 hits: Searels legging out a gap-shot double for one of his.

Next up: UMPI will play MCLA for a doubleheader on Wednesday morning beginning at 9:30.
