Owls Win First Game of the Season in Doubleheader Split

AUBURNDALE, FL — The Owls (0-3) squared off with  Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (2-4) for the third straight year on their Florida trip. In game one, UMPI lost in heartbreaking fashion 4-3 in eight innings. In game 2, the Owls bounced back in a big way. The bats got hot early and often en route to an 11-2 victory.

Game 1 (4-3 – Trailblazers):

How it happened:
Continuing the theme of this season, UMPI fell behind in the first inning. And like the other times, they responded, with two runs tying it at 2 after one frame. From there it became a good old-fashioned pitcher's duel. The game stayed tied at 2 until the 8th inning when MCLA broke the tie making it 4-2. UMPI added one in the bottom half and had runners on, but couldn't quite complete the comeback, falling just short 4-3.

On the mound:
Grad student Payton Jones had many impressive performances last season on the hill. It was evident after the first few innings that this would be another vintage Payton Jones outing. Jones used a lot of offspeed and was able to get into a rhythm early. He would go the distance, tossing 8 innings on 4 earned runs, walking just 2 hitters while striking out 4.

At the Plate:
Junior Catcher Anthony Searels stayed hot at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI. Sophomore Ricky Garcia had two singles as well. Freshman Ben Speed came through with a clutch RBI single in the 8th inning to extend the Owls' comeback bid.

Game 2 (11-2 — Owls):

How it happened:
The Owls jumped out to a very hot start, with four consecutive innings of scoring. Payton Jones started off the scoring with a two RBI inside-the-park home run. Once the Owls got the lead, they did not let up. MCLA tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh with a two run home run, but it wouldn't be enough, leading the Owls to their first victory in Florida over MCLA with a score of 11-2.

On the mound:
Grad student Dakota Morrow got the start for Game 2, looking for another victory against MCLA. Once he stepped on the mound, it became very clear that he would not be leaving it until the game was over. Going the distance, Morrow only let up two runs on four hits, helping secure the victory for the Owls.

At the plate:
The Owls' bats came out early on with 4 consecutive innings of runs scored. Grad student Timmy Burns, senior Joey Lippo each had double: as well as six players on the Owls with RBI's. Payton Jones and Ricky Goupille went a combined 6 for 6 as the 8 and 9 hitters. These plays helped the Owls put up 11 runs over the course of the game, giving them the win.
