PRESQUE ISLE, ME
The University of Maine at Presque Isle Volleyball team continued their up and down season with a single-game conference matchup against the Terriers of Thomas college. In a match poised to be a close one from the get-go, it was exactly that. Despite the Terriers winning in a sweep, the Owls fought hard in every set and came up just short in the second and third sets. Had they gone any other way, it would have been a very different story.
(Thomas 3-0) 25-13, 28-26, 25-23.
The first set was the most lopsided of them all, seeing Thomas build on an early lead, and never trailing. The Terriers closed out the set with six straight points.
The second set was no-doubt the most entertaining one for fans in attendance. With a couple of early lead changes, the Owls eventually went on a run, scoring seven of nine points to lead 9-5. Another mini run of seven of eight points put them up 19-10 and in firm position to even the match. The Owls racked up the kills in this set with 15 in total and appeared to be in control.
That was until they were one point away with a 24-18 lead. Thomas was able to rattle off six points in a row to tie it at 24. The teams then traded points for a while before Thomas was finally able to get over the hump and win by a score of 28-26, coming from behind to extend the set, and eventually prevailing.
Set three saw UMPI jump out to a commanding 10-2 lead, but Thomas played well from behind, coming all the way back and taking another close one, 25-23.
Top Performers:
Faith Graham led in kills with 10, and also contributed two blocks, and continues to make a huge difference for UMPI on the front line. Jade Anspach and Brooklynn Siebrasse also chipped in eight kills each as the offense seemed to be firing on all cylinders for certain parts of the match. Alexis Engel had 24 assists, with Riley Kolkow contributing seven. Kylee Blazick had 20 digs, while Mia Guttierez and Brooklynn Siebrasse had 13 and 12 respectively.
The Owls will have a quick turnaround, taking on the defending NAC East Champions, Maine Maritime Academy. The Owls will host a single game match, scheduled to start at 3pm tomorrow afternoon at Wieden Gymnasium.
