Owls Compete in Colby Tournament

UMPI Fights Hard vs Tough Opponents

WATERVILLE, ME – The UMPI Owls women's volleyball team competed in the annual Colby College Volleyball Tournament, facing off again Colby, Gordon College and SUNY Cazenovia. The Owls faced off against Colby in the first game losing in three sets, followed by a 3-0 loss to Gordon College. The second day the Owls played a non-conference match vs NAC opponent SUNY Cazenovia, losing that match 3-1.
 

Match 1
Owls vs Mules – 10-25, 21-25, 21-25

The Owls Defense kept them in the games, as they recorded a total of 45 digs to the Mules 85 total attacks. In the first set the Mules came out of the gate hot, with an early game run, which they then finished with a five point run to end the game.
The second and third set were a different story as the Owls were able to stay with the mules. Staying even throughout the second match UMPI found themselves in a close game, before Colby was able to put it away. The third and final set, the Owls would continue their back and forth battle with the Mules, finding themselves with the lead, 17-14. More back and forth play, the Owls and Mules would sit tied 21 each late in the game. It was the Mules who would finish the game on a four score run to put the match away.
Hailey Kelly yet again led the Owls with 12 assists, also recording a team high eight digs. Makayla Miskiewicz and Tallia Robledo each led the team with four kills each, Robledo, only off eight attacks. As a team the Owls had seven different players with one or more kills, recording 18 as a team, and nine Owls recorded two or more digs to give the teams total to 45.
 

Match 2
Owls vs Fighting Scots – 12-25, 18-25, 15-25

In their second game of the first day, the Owls found themselves against another tough opponent. UMPI would continue to battle, as the score was 10-7 in the Scots favor before a couple quick runs gave the Scots the edge and later the victory.
The second match was a game of runs as the Owls built a small lead early until the Scots answered with a run to give them a 9-6 lead. The Owls brought the lead with in one shortly after, followed by more back and forth play, as the score was 14-12 Scots halfway through the match. Despite the Owls battling, the back and forth play way not enough as the Scots edged the victory. More of the same in the third set, as UMPI's runs gave them a mid-set lead. The Scots would answer with a couple five-point runs to give them the lead and the set.
Makayla Miskiewicz led the Owls with five kills on 18 attempts. Amalia Erives led UMPI with eight assists. UMPI would finish the match with 18 kills as a team, 14 assists and 27 digs. Alondra Lopez-Aquino added to the scoring with two service aces.  

 
Match 3
Owls vs Wildcats – 22-25, 17-25, 25-18, 17-25

In the final day of the tournament the Owls faced off against the SUNY Cazenovia Wildcats. Some early back and forth play in the first set, led to and UMPI lead early, 8-7. The Wildcats immediately followed with a five-point run. The Owls battled back, gaining points gradually, before going on a four-point run themselves, now leading the Wildcats 18-16. Late in the game, the Owls were up 23-20, before the Wildcats came in with a clutch with a four-point run to take the win. In the second set, the Owls battled to maintain the lead 13-11, before another run by the Wildcats gave them the lead. Cazenovia was able to maintain their lead to win the second set.
As the Owls faced an elimination set, they were able to come away with their first set win of the weekend. An early lead by the Owls was followed by a quick five-point run by the Wildcats to give them a one point lead, 8-7. A four-point run followed by a three-point run for the Owls gave them a 15-9 lead. As the battle of the runs continued, the Owls would answer every run that the Wildcats made, to keep the lead. A late run by the Wildcats brought them within three, but it was UMPI this time that put the third set away, 25-19. The fourth set, the Owls ran out of gas, finding themselves down 18-11. As they found their energy, a couple short runs were not enough as the Owls lost the final set.
The Owls will take a week off as they will host Northern Maine opponent University of Maine at Fort Kent on September 23, in Gentile Hall.
