Owls First Home Game Results in 2-1 Win

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The UMPI Owls Men's Soccer team earns their first win of the year vs North Atlantic Conference opponent Maine Maritime Academy, 2-1. The Owls now move to 1-0 in the NAC and 1-1-1 on the season. This was the Owls first win over the Mariners in over 10 years.

In their first home game of the season, the Owls started off hot with an early goal by Nyden Reed. The Owls captain scored in the 11th minute of the game off an assist by forward teammate, Diego Vega. With the Mariners battling back, the Owls defense led by, last week's NAC defensive player of the week, Xavier McAtee, the Owls were able to hold off the corners and shots by MMA. After holding the Mariners back, the Owls found their offense again, scoring another goal in the first period. This time it was Diego Vega who put the ball in the back of the net, assisted by first year player Matthew Bayonne. With that goal in the 32nd minute, the first half shortly came to a close.

The Mariners came out of the gate with tremendous pressure as the physical game led to an early penalty kick goal for the Mariners. Reuben Harrison scored the PK goal to bring them within one goal, just 45 seconds into the second half. With the physical play, the Owls defense held up and kept the Mariners from tying the game. McAtee led the way with four saves in the second half while the Owls continued to apply pressure with three shots.

With 18 Owls players seeing the field, the whole team earned this win, giving them a great 1-0 start in conference play. The Owls will play non-conference opponent Fisher College at 2:00pm tomorrow at UMPI's Park Family Field
