LYNDON, VT
The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2026 season Saturday afternoon, defeating VTSU-Lyndon 2-1 at Varsity Field. After a scoreless first half, the Owls scored twice in the second half and held off a late Lyndon goal to secure their first North Atlantic Conference victory of the season.
How it Happened:
Both teams battled through a defensive opening 45 minutes, with neither side able to find the back of the net. UMPI generated eight shots in the first half, including four on target, while limiting Lyndon to three shots and one shot on goal. Goalkeeper Michaela Carney made one save during the opening half to keep the game scoreless. The Owls also earned two corner kicks during the first half as they continued to pressure the Lyndon defense.
UMPI wasted little time finding the breakthrough after halftime. Just over three minutes into the second half, Kamryn Clavette scored at 48:11 to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. UMPI continued to control the offensive action, eventually doubling its advantage in the 79th minute. Ella McCarthy scored at 78:34, with Abby Doughty providing the assist to make it 2-0. The Owls finished with 23 shots, including 13 on target, while earning seven corner kicks throughout the match.
Lyndon answered late when Wahaila Granillo scored at 84:03, cutting the UMPI lead to 2-1. The Owls' defense held firm during the final minutes, preventing Lyndon from finding an equalizer and securing the victory. Carney finished with three saves over 90 minutes, while Lyndon goalkeeper Aracely Delgado-Juarez made 11 saves.
Top Performers:
UMPI Attack: Kamryn Clavette led the Owls with eight shots and six shots on goal, adding the opening goal. Ella McCarthy recorded four shots, two on goal, and a goal of her own. Abby Doughty also recorded an assist on McCarthy's second-half goal.
In Goal: Michaela Carney made three saves while allowing one goal over 90 minutes.

The victory moves UMPI to 1-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in NAC play, giving the Owls their first win and first conference victory of the season. The Owls return home next Saturday, October 3, for a Homecoming Weekend matchup against Thomas College. The NAC contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Presque Isle.
