AUGUSTA, ME
It was a hard earned draw, but the UMPI Women's Soccer team was able to pick up their first decision of the year on the road at the University of Maine at Augusta Moose. The Owls fell behind early but picked up the equalizer late in the first half. The second half remained a stalemate though there were plenty of opportunities to go around.
How it Happened:
UMA opened up controlling the bulk of the possession time early. Winning the field position battle, they turned it into an early advantage, scoring in the 7th minute to go up 1-0.
UMPI survived from there and used a set piece with just under 15 minutes in the 21st half to lead to a scoring opportunity. UMA quickly dumped it back out but were out of position as Ella McCarthy found Kamryn Clavette behind the defense but onside, made a great run and got a touch to get it by the Moose goalkeeper and tie the game at one.
It was Clavette's first goal of the year, but she led the Owls in scoring last year. UMPI hopes it will be the first of many as the veteran duo of McCarthy and Clavette connected to even the tide.
The game entered a stalemate the rest of the way, with UMPI keeper Michaela Carney keeping the Owls in it. She made 11 saves on the afternoon, facing 16 total shots. UMPI put up six total shots and four on target. UMA enjoyed five corner kicks while UMPI didn't have any but didn't need any to earn the draw.
Top Performers:
Kamryn Clavette paced the offense with the one goal and two shots on target. Madison Bridges and Abby Doughty each had a shot on goal as well. Michaela Carney had the aforementioned 11 saves, which brings her to the top of the North Atlantic Conference at 60 total saves on the year.
Next Up:
UMPI will look to pick up their first victory of the year on the road at VTSU-Lyndon on Saturday. The Owls take on the Hornets starting at 3:30pm. Then they'll play the Fisher Falcons on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
