Chadwick Pitches Three-Hit Shutout as Owls Split Weekend

UMPI Baseball wrapped up their series with Maine-Farmington on day two by splitting another pair, dropping game one before responding with a strong shutout win to close things out for their 6th win of the year, and 5th win in league play.

Game 1: 6-3 Beavers

The Owls got on the board early in the 2nd on a sacrifice fly from Aiden Toy, but Farmington answered right back with a big inning. A two-RBI double from Colby Lewis, followed by a sac fly, quickly flipped the game, and the Beavers added more in the 3rd to extend their lead to 5-1. UMPI showed some fight throughout the game. Brock Black drove in a run with a double in the 4th, and Hector Perez added an RBI single in the 7th, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome as the Owls lost 6-3. Garrett Chadwick led the way offensively with two hits, while Black and Perez each drove in runs. On the mound, Diego Maldonado took the loss, while Seth Espling provided solid relief, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings.

Game 2: 4-0 Owls

The Owls bounced back like they always seem to do this year in game two, putting together one of their cleanest performances of the season. UMPI capitalized on early opportunities, scoring twice in the 2nd on a clutch two-RBI single from Mason Long. They continued to take advantage of Farmington miscues, adding runs in the 3rd and 6th, with Brock Black and Hector Perez each contributing to extending the lead. From there, it was all Garrett Chadwick. The right-hander was dominant, going the distance in a complete game shutout. He allowed just three hits, didn't walk a batter, and struck out five in a composed and efficient outing to get the win 4-0. Long led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Kley and Toy also contributed in a balanced effort.

Across both days, the Owls showed resilience. In the losses, it often came down to one big inning or defensive miscues that swung momentum. But in their wins, UMPI played clean baseball, getting timely hits, strong pitching, and limiting mistakes. The offense proved it can produce in bunches, especially from guys like Brock Black, Garrett Chadwick, and Mason Long, while the pitching staff showed flashes of real control when playing with a lead. Splitting the series, UMPI walks away with momentum and a clearer identity: when they limit errors and control innings, they can compete with anyone.

Next Up:

UMPI improves to 6-15 on the year, and 5-11 in conference. The Owls hit the road again next weekend, heading to Augusta to take on the University of Maine at Augusta Moose on April 18th and 19th.
