UMPI Men's Soccer gave the defending NAC runners-up and 2024 NAC Champions about all they could handle on Saturday. The Thomas Terriers still picked up the win, but nothing was easy as the Owls proved their competitive spirit in the 2-0 defeat.
How it Happened:
The first half was a totally different story from the last time these two teams clashed that saw Thomas win easily. Absolutely nothing was easy for the Terriers who boast one of the deepest rosters in the league and are expected to make another push for the title this year.
The Owls did not get a shot off the entire first half, but they also held Thomas to just six shots, five of which were on target and saved by Brett Senal. The most impressive one coming on a penalty kick after an UMPI hand ball in the 41st minute. Senal dove to the lower left frame to save it, as a burst of energy came through the Owls who were able to keep it scoreless going into halftime.
It remained as that score well into the second half also. The Owls had a great chance to tie Thomas, but an own goal doomed them in the 68th minute of the match. Thomas did add a goal themselves to put the thing away in the 86th minute, to pick up the 2-0 victory.
Top Performers:
Brett Senal was excellent yet again in goal for the Owls, making six saves throughout the day, five of which came in the first half to keep the Owls in it. Isaac Doore had the only two shots for UMPI, as the Owls' striker put one on frame, playing all 90 minutes.
Next Up:
UMPI improves to 2-6-1 on the season and 1-2 in NAC play. UMPI will get right back to their home pitch on Tuesday, when they host UMFK for a home game beginning at 3pm.
