FARMINGTON, ME
The season came to an end for the UMPI Men's Soccer Team on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls needed to win to extend their season, but were unable to hold down the Farmington attack, falling 3-1.
How it Happened:
The Beavers scored first, but it was well into the game. In the 27th minute, it became 1-0. With less than six minutes left in the half, Farmington struck again, and took a two goal lead, making it seem it would be easy for the Beavers to ride out the victory.
But the Owls had something to say on the very last thing to happen in the first half. UMPI earned a corner kick with time dwindling under 15 seconds, Edmundo Cuervo-Alanis teed up a ball toward the back post, that found the head of Andrew Morales and popped into the net with the Farmington keeper slightly off his line.
The Owls stole one before the end of the half to get back in it. Much like they did against Husson trailing 2-0 with the odds stacked against them, the Owls found a way to make a game of it.
The burst of hope was short lived however, as ten minutes into the second half Farmington made it 3-1. The Owls challenged Farmington's keeper several times the rest of the way but could not find the back of the net for the remaining minutes.
Top Performers:
Edmundo Cuervo-Alanis had two of UMPI's five shots, all of which were on goal. Isaac Doore, Andrew Morales, and Garrett Plourde each had a shot on target as well.
UMPI's keepers split duties with Christo Veselinovic playing the first half and making two saves, while Brett Senal played the second half and made three saves.
Moving On:
The Owls finished the year 2-12-1 but were much more competitive against the field. Several times they played with their toughest opponents on the schedule and gave them all they could handle, but unfortunately not for the full 90 minutes. Leading the charge was senior Isaac Doore, who will finish his career on a high note, scoring six goals on the year to lead the team. Doore was a starter for all four years, and a captain from his Sophomore year and on, showcasing what he means to those around him. Jovain Barrett also played his final season, making 13 starts and scoring three goals for the Owls. Barrett also had a solid career at multiple positions for UMPI. Wing player Billy Wray was a four year starter as well, and key contributor in each of his four years. Kennen Bean will also graduate, having his season cut short due to an injury, but was a devoted voice and leader to the Owls all four of his years.
