The UMPI Men's Soccer looked to continue to compete with some of their best opponents and toughest schedule stretch of the year when they hosted Maine Maritime on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, as has been the theme over that stretch the second half was not kind to the Owls.
How it Happened:
The Owls celebrated senior day on Saturday afternoon, though it wouldn't be their final home contest with still two more on the docket. Before the game, Billy Wray, Jovain Barrett, Kennen Bean and Isaac Doore were honored for their dedication to the program over the last four years.
The first half was an even one in terms of scoring opportunities with both teams putting up five shots and three on frame. Both keepers made three saves, but MMA had possession time nearly the whole half though the Owls had them off balanced. The Mariners had six corner kicks and UMPI had zero. The Owls have made a pattern of confusing their opponent in the first half, but unfortunately the late game got them again.
MMA came out firing in the second half, putting more pressure on and broke the scoreless tie in the 59th minute. In the 66th minute they put the game away to make it 2-0, and added a third for good measure in the 79th minute. The Owls scoring chances ran dry as the wind was taken out of their sails after the second goal.
Top Performers:
Isaac Doore again set the tone up front for UMPI putting up four shots and two on target. Edmundo Cuervo-Alanis had the other one on target to give UMPI their team total of five and three respectively. Brett Senal played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves.
Next Up:
UMPI drops to 2-8-1, and 1-3 in conference play. They will take on Lesley University in Lexington, Massachusetts next Saturday. With the end of the season looming the Owls still have three league games on the schedule to try and make a push for a postseason bid.
