PRESQUE ISLE, ME
UMPI Women's Basketball took on the now first place MMA Mariners on Friday night as they looked to compete with the league's best. UMPI had a decent day shooting the ball themselves but were no match for the Mariners hot shooting, as they made 16 three-pointers as a team on 38 attempts.
How it Happened:
UMPI fell behind in the first quarter as that hot shooting came out early and often for MMA. It was 23-6 after one quarter as UMPI searched for answers with MMA starting the game on a 10-0 run. UMPI put up ten points collectively in the second quarter to go into halftime trailing 43-16. The Owls played much better in the second half, as they shot about 14% better as a team. UMPI couldn't cut into any deficits the whole night however as MMA just simply never slowed down. Senior Mariner Evelyn Dagan made history, becoming the all-time leading three-point shooter in program history and reached 1,000 career points on the same night as she had 20 to lead MMA. The Owls put up 15 in the third and 13 in the fourth as they start clicking more on offense, but it was simply no match for the Mariners attack.
Top Performers:
UMPI was led by Camryn Ala who had 16 points in her best game of the season so far and one of the best of her career at UMPI. She had four three-pointers on the night going 4-5 from bonus distance. Nevaeh Bello was solid as well, logging 13 points and seven rebounds. Logan Curtis had eight rebounds off the bench to lead UMPI in that category.
Next Up:
The Owls will have another very tough matchup as the second place team in the conference, UMF Beavers come up to Presque Isle for a 4 p.m. tip-off time. The Beavers are now 10-2 in conference.
