UMPI Drops Tough One to UMA, Celebrate The Careers of Seven Seniors

PRESQUE ISLE, ME

The Owls kicked off senior day festivities by recognizing the careers of seven student athletes on the Women's Basketball team. Lauren Magno, Bailey Michelle LaPlante, Alexis Engel, Amelia Ivey, Anaira Ayala, Jovanna Oliva, and Alexis Ireland. Unfortunately, the Owls couldn't quite grind out the win on Senior Day against the now 18-2 UMA Moose.

How it Happened:

The Moose jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead through the first four and a half minutes, but the Owls came back quickly to stay in it. UMA closed out the first quarter with a five-point lead at 17-12. The discrepancy ended up being the exact same in the second quarter, as the Moose outscored UMPI by five to take a 10-point locker room lead, as it finished 34-24, making it two straight quarters with the Moose scoring 17 and UMPI scoring 12.

The lead grew for the Moose to as many as 14 in the third quarter, before UMPI chipped at it to get it down to single digits entering the final frame. The Owls couldn't quite capitalize on as many opportunities as they needed to in order for a comeback, as the game hovered around double digits for the rest of the fourth quarter. In the end, the Moose finished out the game with a 61-49 victory.

Top Performers:

The Owls were led in scoring by Anaira Ayala with 14, and Lindsay Hamilton also with 14 points. Hamilton also had a double-double with 13 rebounds to lead the glass for the Owls as well. Alexis Ireland had 10 points and 11 rebounds also earning a double-double.

Next Up:

The Owls will finish up their 2024-2025 campaign on the road when they go down to Castine and Waterville to face Maine Maritime Academy on Friday night and Thomas College on Saturday afternoon. Both are North Atlantic Conference Matchups.
