The UMPI Women's Basketball team finished their first semester with a very tough draw, as they had to face UMaine Farmington on Friday night, before getting perennial powerhouse Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday.
Friday Night:
UMPI endured a challenging first half to put the ball in the hoop, despite outscoring UMF in the third quarter They fell behind 23-5 after one and 53-12 at halftime. But in the third quarter the Owls looked good, scoring 16 points as the Owls shot much better and also rebounded better with 13 in the frame. UMF would outscore UMPI 21-10 in the final frame, winning it 89-38.
Top Performers:
Nevaeh Bello led the Owls in scoring with 12 points from off the bench though she played 30 minutes total. Bello went 5-12 shooting and buried a couple of threes. Four other players had six points for UMPI: Camryn Ala, Aleyah Matheson, Lindsay Hamilton and Logan Curtis. Curtis led the Owls in rebounds off the bench with nine boards in 17 minutes played. Hamilton had seven rebounds herself.
Saturday Afternoon:
Not much went right for the Owls as they ran into MMA who is still an absolute winning machine down in Castine, as they finish they went into the game with just one loss on the year. The Mariners shot an amazing clip of 55.1% on the day, including a first quarter where they shot 68.75% as a team (11-16). They also buried ten threes. With those things in mind, it was no surprise the Mariners enjoyed a season high 98 points while also holding UMPI to 24 as they struggled to get the ball in the hoop.
Top Performers:
Lindsay Hamilton got to double digits to lead UMPI with her 11 points despite the Owls behind held to a season low. Hamilton went 5-8 from the field, and also grabbed four rebounds to lead UMPI on the glass. Aleyah Matheson had five, Logan Curtis had four, Camryn Ala had three, and Madison Bridges had one to round out the scoring for UMPI.
Next Up:
The Owls will regroup and take a couple weeks off from practices as the semester ends. The next time the Owls will be in action is January 5th when they host SUNY Cobleskill, with SUNY Delhi the next day.
