WATERVILLE, ME
The UMPI Women's Basketball team took the court for the second straight night when they took on the Thomas College Terriers for a Saturday early evening NAC matchup. A monster second quarter from Thomas ended up spelling the difference in this one as the Terriers shot very well from the field.
How it Happened:
UMPI set out to keep things close-and they did for a good part of the first quarter as the Owls took a 6-3 lead through the first two and a half minutes, arguably their fastest start to a game all year. Thomas responded, with a slow but deliberate 15-0 run however, as they led 18-6 with 1:10 to go while UMPI went cold. The Owls got four quick points though to end the first to keep it an eight point game at 18-10.
In the second quarter, is where Thomas came to play. The Terriers scored 30 points and shot 72.2% from the field at 13 for 18 and 3 for 5 from three-point range. It was clearly Thomas' best ball of the night, and it completely flipped the game on its head. The Owls scored 10 points again in the second which was certainly not enough as Thomas led 48-20 at halftime. In the third, Thomas slowed down a little, but not a lot, as they scored 25 more points while going 9 for 19 from the field, and adding five more three-pointers. After three quarters, Thomas had run away with a 73-30 lead.
UMPI outplayed Thomas in the fourth quarter, proving the Owls refusal to quit. They outscored Thomas 11-10 in the final frame as the Terriers slowed down, brining the final score to 83-41.
