PRESQUE ISLE, ME
It was déjà vu all over again for the UMPI Men's Basketball team as they took on Lesley University for the second straight day. They defeated the Lynx in another game in which they never trailed. The Owls came away with a nearly identical score from the night prior with an 84-65 win.
How it Happened:
The Owls started off red hot, scoring the first eight points forcing an early Lesley timeout. That lead grew to 16-4 before Lesley was able to quiet the tide momentarily. They kept up the pace all the way down to five minutes left in the first half, with a commanding 42-19 lead. Lesley closed out the half on a 10-3 run to get it under 20. At the beginning of the second half it was all Lynx. They came storming back, scoring the first 13 points of the half to get it back to a three-point game. The Owls were able to respond however, staving off the fiery comeback by going on a run of their own. Their lead grew slowly but surely the rest of the game, as they picked up the wire-to-wire 21-point victory. UMPI shot 47.9% as a team, a tick above their average on the year. They were able to capitalize on a lot of turnovers and won the fast break battle 26-20.
Top Performers:
Akhe McMichael led in scoring once again with 24 points. He added 11 boards as well to lead the Owls in that category too. Charlie Mellick had a productive 14 points off the bench along with James Yamashita who had nine points off the bench. The rest of the scoring was very balanced as UMPI spread the love to nine different scorers throughout the afternoon.
Next Up: UMPI improves to 10-3 overall, marking their quickest to ten wins in 30 years. They will travel to Delhi New York for a big conference road weekend against SUNY Delhi on Sunday and SUNY Cobleskill on Monday.
