PRESQUE ISLE, ME
It took everything they had, but the UMPI men continue to find ways to grind and close out games as they hosted and defeated the Lyndon Hornets on Sunday Afternoon. The Hornets entered with a 4-12 record but found themselves playing with the lead as they answered the bell with most of the Owls runs. That was until the final few minutes when UMPI finally was able to pull ahead and pick up the 89-80 victory.
How it Happened:
The Owls opened up with a run as they so often have so far this season which prompted a Lyndon timeout when it was 10-3. After that timeout is when the Hornets completely flipped the script. They responded with a 17-2 run and took a 20-12 lead. UMPI would be playing cat-chup for a while after that. The teams traded off the rest of the first half, but UMPI never got closer than three points as Lyndon closed it out with a six-point lead behind Gregory Gonyea Jr.'s efforts. He would finish with 30 points in the losing effort.
In the second half, UMPI opened up with their biggest punch yet, starting the half on an 11-2 run to retake the lead. The Hornets would not keel over however, and fought back as the teams traded blows for the next 12 minutes of game time. The final six minutes is what proved to be the difference in the game. UMPI opened up the game , leading by nine with 4 minutes left and that's all they'd need as they made some free throws and milked a lot of the remaining time.
Top Performers:
Akhe McMichael led the way for UMPI with 22 points as well as seven rebounds. Saquan Carwell came up huge in the second half especially as he finished with 19 and 13. Carswell has stepped into a huge role in the last couple of games. Dwaine Williams had 16 and seven while Gilbert Jean Mendez had 12 and five as UMPI continues to put multiple players in double figures. James Yamashita had seven for UMPI in 20 solid minutes off the bench.
Next Up:
UMPI will play hosts to Vermont State University Johnson tomorrow afternoon for a 2 p.m. start. They improve to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in NAC play.
