PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) is excited to announce the addition of David Gustin to its Cross Country and Track & Field teams. David, a talented athlete from Winthrop High School in Winthrop, Maine, will be joining UMPI as a first-year student this fall, majoring in Physical Education.
David has been a standout Varsity Runner at Winthrop High School, achieving impressive personal records (PRs) in multiple events. He has recorded a time of 2:18 in the 800m, 5:28 in the 1600m, 12:05 in the 3200m, 8:35 in the 2k Steeplechase, and 20:15 in the 5k. His high school career is marked by numerous team and individual accolades. David was a member of the 2023 MVC Champion team in Cross-Country and the 2023 Class C South Regional Champion team. In 2024, he contributed to his team's victory as MVC Champion in the 4x800m relay and helped secure a fourth-place finish at the Class C State meet in the same event.
David expressed his enthusiasm for joining UMPI, stating, "I am truly honored to be continuing my academic and athletic career at UMPI! I have been coming up to Presque Isle my whole life."
Winthrop High School Cross-Country and Track Coach Ed Van Tassel shared his thoughts on David's progression and potential: "David Gustin joined the Winthrop Cross-country team as a team manager his sophomore year. He provided a valuable service to the team with mile splits and much positive energy. He served in this role for two years, while also dipping his toe into a race or two. Come his senior year, he was all in as a racer. He finished the year running varsity for a very deep and talented team that won two conference titles, two regional titles, and a state runner-up finish. I can not wait to see how he progresses as an UMPI Owl."
UMPI is thrilled to welcome David Gustin and looks forward to his contributions to the Cross Country and Track & Field teams. His dedication, talent, and enthusiasm are sure to make a significant impact in the coming seasons.
