UMPI Welcomes Raymond Putnam as Head Cross Country Coach/Track and Field Assistant Coach

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) is excited to announce the hiring of Raymond Putnam as the new Head Cross Country Coach/Track and Field Assistant Coach. With an extensive and successful coaching career, Putnam brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of developing elite athletes and successful programs.

Putnam, a graduate of the University of Southern Maine with a BA in History, has demonstrated exceptional coaching abilities across various institutions. Having success at different NCAA levels, coach Putnam has proven his ability to recruit high level student athletes and build successful programs.Throughout those years coaching, coach Putnam has coached over 30 All-Americans in both Cross Country and Track and Field. 

Putnam has a distinguished coaching career highlighted by notable achievements at several institutions. At Eastern New Mexico University, he served as the Assistant Track and Field/Cross Country Coach, where he developed a cross-country course and coached athletes to significant successes, including a Conference Champion in women's shot put and a male javelin qualifier for nationals. During his tenure at The College of Saint Rose as the Head Track and Field Coach, Putnam successfully recruited over sixty student athletes and coached the first athlete to qualify for NCAA Division 2 nationals in 14 years, leading his team to numerous all-region honors and conference awards.

At Garden City Community College, Putnam managed the recruitment of over seventy NJCAA-level athletes, achieving top finishes in national indoor and outdoor track and field championships. His leadership at Saint Joseph's College of Maine as the Head Track/Cross Country Coach resulted in the development of a competitive program, earning multiple conference awards and recognitions, including Coach of the Year honors, and notable academic achievements for his teams.

Putnam spoke about his excitement in his new position at UMPI. "I would like to thank Coach Dan, Kane, and the search committee for this amazing opportunity. I am so excited to be back home in Maine. I will look forward to working with all of the coaches! I look forward to helping make UMPI the number one destination for distance runners in the state of Maine."
