Game Recap: Baseball |

UMPI Falls in Weekend Fisher Series

LYNN, MA — UMPI's bats would follow a similar trend as the weather they would play in: going from red hot down in Florida to ice cold in a weekend series with one of the top opponents they will play all season: the Fisher Falcons of the NAIA.

Game 1 (14-2 Falcons)
How it happened:
The real feel hovered around 20 degrees for a windy nightcap game to open up the series. UMPI (1-6) would win the opening frame for the first time on the year; scoring twice in the first. Fisher's bats were unaffected by the cold as they would respond with 9 runs over the next two to get a stranglehold on the game. They wouldn't look back, winning the game 14-2 in seven innings.

At the Plate:
Catcher Anthony Searels would deliver big time in the first inning with his two-out double to right field that drove in two runs. From there, the Owls bats would begin to struggle. The newest member of the 100 hit club: Joey Lippo, would add two more to his total going 2 for 4. Ben Speed and Ricky Goupille had the only other two hits for the Owls' total of five.

On the Mound:
Garrett Chadwick started for UMPI and threw a convincingly scoreless first inning. He then had two outs without surrendering a run in the second inning before the Falcons were able to find gaps, scoring five. Chadwick would finish his night striking out three batters en route to three innings pitched. Mason Long came on in Long relief for the Owls and threw three innings as well. His luck would be similar of Chadwick's as Fisher continue to hit the ball well. Long would surrender five runs on seven hits, striking out four.

Game 2 (3-1 Falcons)
How it happened:
Fisher tallied runs in each of their first two at bats. From there the game would become a stalemate until the final inning. UMPI struggled to string hits together. They would finish with their highest total on the weekend series, but unfortunately for the Owls, this wouldn't translate to runs. Each team would score one in the seventh, making it a 3-1 final in favor of the home team.

At The Plate:
The Owls' centerfielder and lead-off hitter Joey Lippo extended his hitting streak to nine games going 2-4 with the game's only RBI. Four other hitters in the lineup recorded singles.

On the Mound:
UMPI's starter Payton Jones had the Fisher lineup on its heels all game long, but the Owls' lineup was unable to pull together some runs. Fisher had just two hits through the first five innings before finishing with four. Jones' final stat line read 6 innings pitched, 2 earned runs on 4 hits with one strikeout.

Game 3 (9-0 Falcons)
How it happened:
UMPI's bats would hit rock bottom in this game, failing to score a run while recording just one hit. Fisher got off to a fast start with four runs in the first and two in the second to jump out to a big lead. Fisher would sprinkle three more runs en route to a 9-0 victory.

At the Plate:
UMPI had just the one hit in this game. Anthony Searels found a hole through the left side to get one of the only rallies started.

On the Mound:
Jonah Baude would make his third start of the year for UMPI. Baude would run into trouble in the first two innings allowing six, before settling in, and only surrendering three the rest of the way. Baude pitched all six UMPI innings, striking out five along the way.

UMPI falls to 1-9 after the Weekend slate while Fisher improved to 11-17.

Next up: UMPI will travel to Auburn next Friday to face CMCC for a doubleheader.
