UMPI Owls Soar to Victory: Dominant Performance Secures Weekend Sweep

PRESQUE ISLE, MAINE - In a thrilling North Atlantic Conference showdown, the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls secured an emphatic victory over the Hornets of Vermont State University Lyndon, completing a weekend sweep in their final regular-season games. The Owls dominated the court, clinching a commanding 95-64 win, stamping their authority with a resounding 62-point second half.

Right from the tip-off, UMPI set the tone, surging to an early lead that saw them command a 13-point advantage within the opening eight minutes of play. Their defense was impeccable, stifling the Hornets' offense to just four points during that crucial stretch. However, the resilient Hornets battled back, narrowing the deficit to just six points as the first half drew to a close.

Undeterred, the Owls burst out of the gates in the second half, embarking on a blistering 13-5 run to extend their lead to 48-32 within the initial five minutes. UMPI continued to showcase their prowess on both ends of the floor, maintaining solid defensive pressure while capitalizing on open opportunities to widen the gap further. With ten minutes remaining, they boasted a comfortable 24-point lead, allowing them to coast to a well-deserved victory.

What truly distinguished the Owls' performance was their remarkable team effort, with an astounding 18 players making significant contributions on the court. Leading the charge was Gilbert Jean Mendez, who delivered a stellar performance with 19 points on an impressive 70% shooting, including 3-5 from beyond the arc. Mendez also made his presence felt on the boards, hauling in seven rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Joining Mendez in the spotlight was Myles Jones, who added 13 points to the scoreboard, shooting 5-11 from the field while grabbing six rebounds and tallying four assists. Akhe McMichael showcased his sharpshooting skills, notching 12 points on 5-12 shooting, including an efficient 50% from three-point range. Additionally, Doug McCalla provided crucial rebounding support for UMPI, securing 10 boards alongside his eight points.
