Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UMPI Falls in Rivalry Matchup with UMFK

PRESQUE ISLE, ME

The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls Women's Basketball team took to the floor for the first time since Thanksgiving break and squared off with the University of Maine at Fort Kent Bengals. It was the THINK PINK game, a fundraiser to benefit the Patients Assistance Fund at Northern Light Health to community members impacted by cancer. It was a special night, that raised over 500 dollars. Unfortunately for the home crowd, the first game of the night didn't go as planned.

How it Happened:

UMFK started out fast, scoring the first eight points, and maintaining a strong lead until UMPI closed out the quarter on a run to cut the lead to four after 10 minutes of play. UMFK then went on a monster run to start the second quarter, starting it off by scoring the first 20 points to take a 40-16 lead. This lead proved to be all they needed, as the Owls fought hard to chip away, but the Bengals always had the answers to prevent any type of comeback. In the end it was 86-55 in favor of the visitors.

Top Performers:

For the Owls, they were led by their leading scorer all season long, Alexis Ireland who had 25 points. Amazingly, 15 of these points came from the free-throw line as she went 15 for 16 from the charity stripe. Ireland also had 15 rebounds, turning in her fourth double-double through the first six games of the year.

Anaira Ayala also had a big performance, draining four threes in the second half and finishing with 16 points. Complementing the scoring tandem's efforts was Amelia Ivey who had six points and six rebounds for the Owls.

Next Up:

The Owls will host the Fisher College Falcons this Saturday at 1pm for the final home game of the first semester.
