Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

UMPI Can’t Regain Control Against Eagles, Fall in NAC Opener

BANGOR, ME

The Owls had a historic start to their season during their non-conference schedule, entering their league opener at 7-2. They visited the Husson Eagles on Friday night flying high. Unfortunately, the Owls four-game winning streak would be snapped, eventually falling to the Eagles by 12, but in a game that was neck and neck throughout.

How it Happened:

The game was back and forth throughout the first half, with teams trading runs. UMPI went on a run at one point to take a 28-19 lead with under five minutes in the first half. Husson closed strong however, going on a 12-2 run the rest of the way to take a one-point locker room lead. The Eagles never surrendered this lead, going wire-to-wire in the second half. Husson would go up by seven or eight points, before UMPI would cut back into it. The Owls could never surmount that lead as the Eagles maintained control, eventually icing the game in the last two minutes, winning 76-64.

Top Performers:

The UMPI offense was held relatively in check on this night, scoring their second lowest point total of the year. The Owls were led by Akhe McMichael who had 14 points. Dwaine Williams was right behind him with 13, while Doug McCalla and Saquan Carswell each had 11. Myles Jones added 10 assists and five rebounds for the Owls. UMPI struggled on the offensive glass, securing three offensive boards, putting pressure on the Owls to shoot well. They shot very well in the first half at 52% as a team, before that percentage went down to 44% in total.

Next Up:

UMPI drops to 7-3 overall and it won't get easier for the Owls, as they will finish their first semester of play with another league game. UMPI will travel to Farmington to take on the UMF Beavers. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
