CASTINE, MAINE
The UMPI volleyball team qualified for the North Atlantic Conference playoffs for the fourth straight season with their conference record of 3-5. They earned the four seed and drew the top seeded Maine Maritime Academy Mariners for their first round matchup. Unfortunately for UMPI, history was doomed to repeat itself as the Owls would fall to the same team in the first round as the last two years.
MMA (3-0) 25-10, 25-13, 25-9
UMPI battled hard with the MMA during the regular season, nearly winning a set up in Presque Isle. This time the Mariners ensured a victory for the home team never letting the Owls come close. In set one, MMA grabbed a 5-1 lead before UMPI made it 5-2. Then the mariners went on an eight point run to make it 13-2, and all but solidify the first set. UMPI rallied a little bit with three kill sin four points but it proved too little too late. In set two, MMA grabbed another early lead of 7-2. It would grow to 12-5 before UMPI had their best sequence of the match to that point with four straight points thanks to a couple service aces from Alexis Engel.
The Mariners dominated after the Owls mini-run scoring 9 of 10 points and eventually winning 25-13. The early lead trend would continue into the third set with the Marinersjumping out to a 12-3 lead. The Owls had another four point run to make it 12-7 before MMA scored 10 of the next 11 to solidify their victory and their berth in the NAC Semifinal round.
Top Performers:
UMPI was led in kill sby Faith Graham with five. Alexis Engel had two aces that were back to back in the second set. Jade Anspach and Rylie Kolkow each had one block apiece. Rylie Kolkow had twelve assists and led in digs with eight. Mia Gutierrex added seven while Kylee Blasick had six.
The Owls finish their 2024 campaign at 9-16 and continue to show promise for the future by qualifying for the postseason yet again. UMPI graduates four players: Bailey LaPlante, Myah Bragdon, Alexis Engel, and Kylee Blazick. UMPI thanks them for their careers and dedication to their program over the last few years.
