UMPI Owls Secure Impressive Victory Over NESCAC Foe Bates College

PRESQUE ISLE, MAINE - In a thrilling non-conference showdown, the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) Owls showcased their prowess on the basketball court with an 83-69 triumph over NESCAC representative Bates College. This statement win not only improved the Owls' record to 5-7 but also marked a stellar beginning to their spring semester at 1-0 before diving back into conference play.

The game unfolded with the Bates College Bobcats establishing an early double-digit lead within the initial 8 minutes. Undeterred, the Owls shook off the rust, staging a remarkable comeback to level the score with 4:30 remaining in the first half. They eventually surged ahead, finishing the half with a 5-point lead.

The second half saw UMPI extend their lead further with an impressive 11-2 run in the initial five minutes. Although Bates mounted a short-lived comeback, narrowing the Owls' lead to just 3, UMPI demonstrated resilience, pushing the lead back into double digits and securing the victory with clutch late-game free throws.

Dynamic performances by Dany Harris and Doug McCalla, both scoring 19 points, propelled the Owls to success. Harris additionally contributed nine rebounds, while McCalla grabbed six. First-year standout Saquan Carswell made a significant impact with 13 points, all in a first-half surge that fueled the Owls' energy throughout the game. Gilbert Jean Mendez showcased an all-around performance, contributing eight points, four rebounds, and seven assists. However, it was Jean Mendez's outstanding defensive efforts that shone, holding NESCAC's leading scorer, Marc McCormick, to just seven points.

With this impressive victory under their belt, the UMPI Owls will now turn their focus to conference play, set to face SUNY Canton on Friday. The team's cohesive performance and tenacious spirit bode well as they navigate the challenges ahead in pursuit of further success.
