2023 UMPI Owls Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees

PRESQUE ISLE, MAINE - The University of Maine of Presque Isle Owls Athletics Hall of Fame is September 16th on Homecoming Weekend in the MPR at the UMPI Campus Center @ 5:30 PM.

Jay Bedwell (1988)
Men's Basketball
Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Art Education

Jay Bedwell is recognized as an inductee into the University of Maine at Presque Isle owls Athletic Hall of Fame for his achievements on the men's basketball team. Bedwell, a 1988 UMPI graduate is a former men's basketball player, while earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Art Education. In his distinguished playing career, from 1984-1988, Bedwell finished his career third on the Owls all time scoring list with 1,404 points, currently sitting in the fifth spot. 

Bedwell's career has many highlights, beginning with his first year, as he scored 413 points while shooting an impressive 72.1% from the field, earning him to be named to the 1984-84 NAIA All-American Honorable Mention as he finished first in the nation in field goal percentage. As Bedwell's career continued, so did his efficient scoring. Finishing his career with an average of 14.2 points per game while shooting 61.1% from the field and shooting 80.1% from the free throw line. 

While Bedwell's efficient scoring highlighted his career, he was also a skilled rebounder, finishing his career with 716 total rebounds, averaging 6.6 per game. Taking on the lead rebounding role for his team in his second year, as he grabbed 251 rebounds in the 1985-86 season, putting him at the top of the Owls all-time list for rebounds in a season. In his four years, Bedwell helped lead the Owls to a 55-53 record.

Once graduating from UMPI in 1988, Bedwell went on to pursue his career in Elementary Education. Bedwell spent his first three years teaching in the Presque Isle School System, before moving to Indianapolis to teach at Mill Creek Community School, where he stayed for the next 11 years. During those years, he earned a Masters in Elementary Education while earning his Administration and Supervision License. In 2002, Bedwell earned his first school Principal job, later moving to James A. Allison Elementary where he has served as the school's principal for the last 19 years, as the school has flourished in those years. 





 
Pam Gee (1986)
Women's Basketball
Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education

Pam Gee is recognized as an inductee into the University of Maine at Presque Isle owls Athletic Hall of Fame for her achievements on the women's basketball team. A 1986 graduate from the UMPI, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education. During her four year career, Gee played on the women's basketball team from 1982-86. 

During Gee's four years with the Owls, she went on to become the second women's basketball player in school history to score 1,000 points in a career. Her scoring was highlighted her junior year (84'-85') where she scored 392 points and made 175 2-point field goals. Starting right away in her first year, Gee helped her team to a 15+ win season, as the program continued to grow during her stint. 
During her playing time, Gee helped her team set numerous school records. Including the following, set in the 1985-86 season: Most wins in a season with 24, Highest winning percentage with 74.4%, most consecutive wins with 14, and highest average margin of victory with 18.0. During which Gee averaged 2.5 steals per game. 

Gee's performances were rewarded her Junior year. Earning All-American Third Team Honors for the Little College Division and All_Region Honors for the Small College Division in her 1984-85 season. In her final season, Gee was awarded by UMPI, as she earned Female Athlete of the Year.

After graduation, Gee went on to work in education and athletics. Gee became an official for youth and high school sports, eventually officiating Maine High School Field Hockey and Lacrosse Regional and State Championship games. While also working for numerous umpire and official associations, Gee has worked in Elementary Education as a teacher and currently as a Special Education Technician. Gee, a Maine resident her whole life, currently resides in Freeport, Maine as she continues her Special Education and Officiating duties.





 
Andy Jones (1987)
Men's Basketball
Bachelor of Science in Accounting

Andy Jones is recognized as an inductee into the University of Maine at Presque Isle owls Athletic Hall of Fame for his achievements on the men's basketball team. Jones, a 1987 UMPI graduate, as he earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. The four year men's basketball player for the Owls, played from 1983-87. Jones went on to finish his career as the 5th all-time leading scorer at UMPI, with 1,111 career points, currently ranked 12th on the UMPI all-time list.

Jones would average 10.6 points per game over his career, while shooting 51.8% from the field and 80.8% at the free throw line, which put him first all-time in UMPI history in 1987, currently third. His career was highlighted during his sophomore season, where he would score 476 points in the 1984-85 season while shooting 50% from the field. During this season, Jones would be named the MVP of the men's basketball team by UMPI in the yearly awards. 

Continuing to improve his shooting throughout his career, Jones would shoot 59% from the field during his senior year, 1986-87. In his final year, Jones was selected to the 1987 NAIA All-Star Team. Throughout his career, he was named captain for two of his four years, while earning the team varsity award in 1984.

After graduating from UMPI, Jones began his career as a Sales and Operations Manager at American Color Labs. Shortly after, Jones opened Brondy, Inc. Graphics and Marketing as the owner for five years, until 2013. Jones then transitioned his career to the United States Postal Service, where he continues to work. Jones also spent four years in the United States Marine Corps for four years as Corporal E-4.





 
Lori (Morrow) Joseph (2000)
Women's Basketball & Volleyball
Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Leisure Services

Lori Joseph is recognized as an inductee into the University of Maine at Presque Isle owls Athletic Hall of Fame for her achievements on the women's basketball team and volleyball team. Joseph graduated from the UMPI in 2000. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Leisure Services. Joseph came to UMPI as a Sophomore transfer from the University of Maine at Machias, where she played both basketball and volleyball. 

Before attending UMPI, Joseph had a successful two years at the University of Maine at Machias. When transferring to UMPI, Joseph made an immediate impact, earning MAC First Team in both her seasons with the Owls, 1999 and 2000. She was also named the Owls Women's Basketball MVP and the Owls Most Outstanding Female Athlete for back to back years. In her 1999 season, Joseph also was named to the Star City ShootOut All-Tournament Team. 

Joseph went on to become a 1,000 point scorer for the Owls, as she finished her career with 1,219 points. At the time of her career she finished 3rd on the Owls all-time scoring list, now currently sitting in the fourth spot. In her first season with the Owls, Joseph led the Maine Athletic Conference in rebounding with 9.42 rebounds per game, and third in the MAC in scoring with 15.2 points per game. In her senior year, she continued to put up impressive numbers, averaging 9.7 rebounds per game, which earned her a top 20 spot in the nation. 
Not only did Joseph have an outstanding career in basketball at UMPI, she also was a standout volleyball player for the Owls.Playing in three seasons for UMPI, Joseph went on to make the Maine Athletic Conference All-Conference Team all three years, 1998, 1999, and 2000.

After her playing career ended, Joseph went on to coach junior varsity boys and girls basketball for a season each. After coaching, Joseph went on to work as a Territory manager, which she still does today with Gnaz/Midwest CBK. Joseph is married to fellow Hall of Famer Jefferey Joseph as they have two children, Jahleel (13) and Jamal (4).





 
1974 Men's Basketball Team

The 1973-74 Men's Basketball Team will be the second Owls team to be inducted into the UMPI Owls Hall of Fame. The 1974 team went on to win the Northeast College Conference Championship. 
The team was led by current UMPI Hall of Famer coach Francis McGrath (89'), who was named Maine College Basketball Coach of the Year. The team finished the regular season with a 14-4 record and 9-2 in Northeast League play. After their tournament win, the team made the NAIA District Tournament where they finished as the runner-up. The team would average 83.6 points per game and allow their opponents 73.5 points per game throughout their season.

Current UMPI Hall of Famers, such as Chuck Underwood (89'), Andy Palmer (91'), Ed Marshall (99'), and Paul Bouchard (13') helped lead this team to a tremendous season. Underwood led the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging nearly 27 points per game and 16.8 rebounds per game, as he was named the Northeast College Conference Championship Tournament MVP and NAIA All-American, while regularly joining the top ten in the nation in scoring throughout the year. Palmer would average 10.4 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. Bouchard added 12.7 points per game and 7 rebounds per game. These Owls Hall of Famers along with their teammates (listed below) made history at UMPI.

Patrick Baker & Aaron Marston Athletics Impact Memorial Award
Barbara Blackstone (1991)
Barbara Blackstone is the first recipient of the "Patrick Baker & Aaron Marston Athletics Impact Memorial Award."

Blackstone graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 1991 with a Bachelor's of Science in Physical Education.  Since returning to UMPI in August of 1999 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer, Blackstone has worn many hats on the UMPI campus and has been instrumental not only in growing academic programs, but also helping athletics operate and grow into what it is today. 

As an Assistant Athletic Trainer, Blackstone assisted with the development of the CAAHEP Athletic Training Program. In 2000, she was appointed as the Head Athletic Trainer and served in that role until 2004 when she became an Assistant Professor/Athletic Training Education Program Director. In 2010, Professor Blackstone was promoted to Associate Professor of Athletic Training and in 2017 was selected as the Dean of Education which transitioned to the Dean of Professional Programs in 2019. 

She also served a leadership role within the athletics department as the Senior Women's Administrator from 2009 to 2021 and was instrumental in UMPI's transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division III.  Today, Professor Blackstone still serves as the women's soccer faculty co-representative. Throughout her years working with UMPI athletics, she has also served on multiple hiring committees to help select Owl coaches, staff, and administrators.

Along with all she has done for UMPI Athletics, her personal relationship, first serving as a mentor of Patrick and Aaron, then turned into a lifelong friendship. There is no one more fitting to be our first recipient of this very special award.
