Indya Smith to Play for the Owls Women’s Basketball Team

PRESQUE ISLE, MAINE – Head Women's Basketball Coach Gavin Kane is very pleased to announce that Indya Smith from Fresno, California will be attending UMPI in the Fall of 2023 and playing hoops for the Owls. Smith attended Golden West High School in Visalia and completed one year at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois.

Smith is a versatile 5'8" guard who can play the point guard position or play on the wing. "Indya is very athletic and does so many things well on the court," said Coach Kane. "She can run the point, score the ball attacking the rim or from the perimeter, and she rebounds extremely well for a guard. The rebounding is a testament to her natural aggressiveness on the court." Smith averaged 14.4 points per game, 9.6 rebounds, 5.3 steals and 2.4 assists per outing. "Along with being an outstanding player, Indya will come in with some experience which will be important with the group we have coming back. She will compliment the upperclassmen that we have and she is a player who can impact us immediately."

"As a player, hopefully I'll be able to bring a solid guard to the Program. As a teammate, I will be very down to earth and caring of others," said Smith who will major in Criminology with career aspirations of becoming either a Detective or a Therapist for those in Law Enforcement. Smith said she was drawn to UMPI because of a friend and teammate who attends school here who is extremely happy and speaks very highly of the College, the Coaches, and the Team.

Smith gained an All-American award while in High School, was also named First Team All-League, as well as being selected as the Most Valuable Player in the Conference. The Owls Coaches, players, and all of the UMPI Community would like to welcome Indya to our University.
