UMPI Softball Tripleheader in Myrtle Beach

LITTLE RIVER, SC – The University of Rio Grande Red Storm Softball team came in like a storm and blew past the Owls, 16-0, in the middle game of an Owls tripleheader Tuesday afternoon in the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic at the Central Park Sports Complex. The game was called after five innings. In the morning contest, Spaulding University defeated UMPI 6-2. SUNY-Poly defeated the Owls in the nightcap, 7-2.

In game one, the Golden Eagles scored all their runs in the bottom of the third. The biggest blow was a grand slam by Jessica Tucker (Georgetown, KY). The Owls didn't help their own cause as they committed four miscues, allowing two unearned runs to score after the Turner slam.  UMPI did outhit the Spaulding 9-7 for the game. The Owls scored unearned runs in the fifth and seventh frames. Emma McNally (Patton, ME) reached on an error while knocking home Olivia Gray (Southwest Harbor, ME) in the fifth. Owls reliever Megan Buchholz (Garrison, MN) singled with one out in the seventh, sending McNally to third. Moments later, McNally crossed the plate on a passed ball. 

Erica McMann (Bloomington, IL) went the distance on the mound for the Golden Eagles. McMann gave up nine hits while striking out five. Gracelyn Walsh (Grand Bay-Westfield, NB, Canada) took the loss as she pitched the Owls first three, while Buchholz pitched the final three scoreless innings. Walsh struck out three batters. Walsh and Rachel Billings (Lehi, UT) had two hits apiece for the Owls. Madison Loechle (Newcastle, KY) and Jenny Beasley (Lawrenceberg, KY) each had two knocks for Spaulding. Tucker had the slam in the third for the Golden Eagles.

In the second game, the University of Rio Grande went up 2-0 after two innings and crossed the plate a dozen times the following inning. The Red Storm scored their final two runs in the fourth. Hannah Beers (Springfield, OH) picked up the win with three innings of work. Gabby Adams (Grove City, OH) pitched the final two to complete the shutout. Hailey Saylor (Port Jefferson Station, NY) pitched into the third, and suffered the loss. Buchholz finished the game for the Owls. Walsh, Billings and Delaney Anfinson (Green Cove Springs, FL) each had a hit for the Owls. Kayla Sedgwick (Richmond, OH) had three hits (4 RBIs) for the Red Storm. 

In the final game, the Owls jumped out to their only lead of the entire day with a single run in the top of the second. Buchholz reached on an error. After a strikeout, Karis Dankert (Dover Foxcroft, ME) sacrificed Buchholz to second. Zoe Aylward-Frank (Kennebunk, ME) plated Buchholz with an RBI double. Kelly Powell (Clifton Park, NY) gave the Wildcats the lead for a good with a bases-loaded clearing single in the fourth. After the Owls scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth, SUNY-Poly scored three times in the bottom of the frame. Kimberly Birmingham (Camden, NY) had an RBI triple, while teammate Amy DeSena (Pine Bush, NY) had a two-run double. Birmingham ended the scoring in the sixth, with an RBI single to center.

Joy Stevens (Marcy, NY) for SUNY-Poly and Saylor for UMPI both went the distance for their teams. Stevens gave up 11 hits and struck out seven in seven innings for the win. Saylor pitched six innings and had three K's for the Owls. Walsh collected three hits for the Owls. Saylor, Billings, and Aylward-Frank each had a pair. Birmingham, Ava Faragon (Poestenkill, NY) and Maddelyn Hoehn all collected two hits for the Wildcats.

The Owls (0-6) will have a day off on Wednesday, and get back into action on Thursday as they play Albertus Magnus College at 1 pm and Curry College at 3 pm.
