Softball Faces off Against Albertus and Curry at Myrtle Beach

LITTLE RIVER, SC – The Owls softball team met a couple of New England foes Thursday afternoon, but the outcome was the same as Albertus Magnus (New Haven, CT) defeated the Owls, 14-9 in game one in the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic at the Central Park Sports Complex. In Game two, Curry College (Milton, MA) blanked the Owls 7-0.

The Falcons jumped out to a 12-0 lead after three innings, before the Owls scored all of their runs in the middle frames. UMPI plated two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and three runs in the sixth. Gracelyn Walsh (Grand Bay-Westfield, NB, Canada) connected on a sacrifice fly to right and Megan Buchholz (Garrison, MN) had an RBI single to right in the fourth. Walsh had an infield ground out in the fifth. Zoe Stewart (Pleasant Grove, PEI - Canada) hit her first college homerun leading off the sixth. Stewart and Zoe Aylward-Frank (Kennebunk, ME) each had two hits for the Owls. 

Erin Dighello (Wallingford, CT) picked up the win as she pitched the first five innings. Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, CT) threw the final two innings. Buchholz took the loss as she pitched the first inning. Walsh pitched the rest of the game for the Owls.

In game two, Curry College scored two runs in the top of the first, and one run in the third. The Colonels scored a pair in each of the fourth and sixth innings. Emma McNally (Patten, ME), Hailey Saylor (Port Jefferson Station, NY), Delaney Anfinson (Green Cove Springs, FL) and Walsh combined for the team's four hits. Hailey King (Cranston, RI) pitched five innings for the win. Grace Martineau (Westminster, MA) threw the final two frames. Saylor went the distance for the Owls.

The Owls (0-8) will close out their spring trip on Friday when they play Mansfield University at 11 am and Muhlenburg College at 3 pm.
