Owls Face Off Against Colby-Sawyer in FL Tournament

DAVENPORT, FL – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team ended their four game losing streak against their New England rival, UMPI,  in the RussMatt Baseball Tournament Sunday. The Chargers won both games of the twinbill, 18-9 and 19-2.

After jumping out to a 5-0 lead after three innings in game one, Colby-Sawyer doubled the score sending nine to the plate, and scoring five times. The Owls ended their scoreless streak of the early season at a dozen innings with four runs of their own in the sixth. Mason Long (Orrington, ME) leadoff with a single to right. After Joey Blake (Standardsville, VA) walked, Ricky Goupille (Presque Isle, ME) popped out to the catcher. Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA) reached on an infield single loading the bases. Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL) then blooped a  two run single down the right field line. 

After an Owls strikeout, Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) lined an RBI single to center, plating Lippo and sending Burns to third. Burns scored the fourth Owls run when he and Jones executed a double steal to perfection. Colby-Sawyer doubled the Owls output in the bottom of the frame, with their final eight runs of the game. Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) had the biggest hit with a three run homer to center. Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y) had a two run single to center. UMPI came back with five runs in the seventh, with three scoring on an inside the park homer by Lippo. Goupille (RBI single) and Jones (RBI double) knocked home a teammate during the frame.

Garrett Chadwick (Brighton, CO) started the game for the Owls on the mound. Long and Brock Thompson (Cory Pit, ME) followed Chadwick. Jack Mullen (Norfolk, MA) recorded the win for Colby-Sawyer pitching six innings. Kenny Spratt (Wantagh, N.Y) pitched the seventh.

In the nightcap, it was all the Chargers. Colby-Sawyer scored five runs in the first. After a solo run for the Owls in the bottom of the inning, the Chargers scored a pair in the second and sent 13 men to the plate scoring nine times. Lippo led off the third with a triple down the left line and scored on a RBI double to center by Burns. The Chargers scored their final three runs in the seventh.

Montalvo took the win in the second game, as he pitched six innings. Erik Rohs (Lovettsville, Va) tossed the seventh inning for the Chargers. Spencer Harmon (Sidney, BC, Canada) suffered the loss for the Owls, as the hurler only pitched into the third inning. Ian McCray (Corinth, ME)  and Anthony Searles (Middleburg, FL) also threw for UMPI.

Game 1 (18-9 – Chargers):

On the mound: Garrett Chadwick earned his first start as he pitched five innings and striking out four batters, as he faced 28 batters. Mason Long releaved Chadwick for a short part of the sixth inning before Brock Thompson finished the game. Jack Mullen earned the win for Colby-Sawyer.

At the plate: Joey Lippo led the Owls as he hit 3-4 from the plate including three RBI's, while hitting an in the parker homer. Fellow outfielder Payton Jones finished 2-4 from the plate with two RBIs. 

Game 2 (19-2 – Chargers):

On the mound: Spencer Harmon earned the start for the Owls as he pitched 2.1 innings before Ian McCray took over to close out the third inning. Dakota Morrow then pitched the next three innings as he faced 12 batters and only allowing two hits and no runs. Anthony Searels then closed out the game in the final inning. Zach Rodgers earned the win for Colby-Sawyer.

At the plate: Ricky Goupille led the Owls with two hits on his four at bats while Timothy Burns hit a double and Joey Lippo had another big hit as he hit a triple in the game.

The Owls (0-4) will continue their annual spring tournament with a doubleheader against Utica Monday afternoon.
