Owls Beat Bengals at Home

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The UMPI Owls defeated their rivals from the University of Maine-Ft. Kent in a non-conference game Tuesday night 70 to 61 and improved their season record to 9-6.

Both teams started slowly on the offensive end of the floor in the 1st Quarter and the Bengals held a 14 to 11 lead after the initial 10 minutes of play. The Owls picked up their play in the 2nd Quarter outscoring UMFK 18 to 12 and carried a 29 to 26 lead into the half.

UMPI and UMFK traded baskets throughout a fast-paced 3rd period. Senior Emily Wheaton knocked down three 3 pointers in the Quarter along with 5 foul shots, while Jelecia Ma'Gee-Hodges added two hoops and a free throw and Alexis Ireland added two inside scores as the Owls entered the final frame leading 54 to 49.

Ireland was on the receiving end of a nice assist from Wheaton early in the 4th Quarter and Aleia Milano connected on a pass inside to Ma'Gee-Hodges. Wheaton knocked down two free throws and Kourtney West added one as UMPI opened their lead to 61 to 49. The Bengals had another run in them on a Kayla Iwata 3 pointer and a 2 pointer from Karolyn Baptiste inside to cut the margin to 65-59. UMPI would finish the game strong to gain the win. Alexis Ireland scored 16 points, pulled down an impressive 20 rebounds and added 3 blocked shots. Emily Wheaton scored a game-high 28 points and added 8 assists, while Kourtney West had a career-high 14 rebounds, and Jelecia Ma'Gee-Hodges was a third Owls player with double-digit rebounds recording 11 along with her 9 points.

UMPI returns to Conference action on Friday and Saturday when they host the UMF Beavers of Farmington, Maine
