Box Score 2 Auburndale, FL – The Owls baseball team opened up their first day of their Spring Break Florida tournament in Auburndale, FL. Splitting their doubleheader vs Gallaudet University, winning the first game 3-2 and then losing the second in extra innings 7-6.
Game 1 (3-2 – Owls):
How it happened:
The Owls started the scoring off early in the game with a triple by Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA), followed by an RBI single by Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL) to bring Lippo home. The Bison then answered with an RBI double to tie the game in the top of the second inning. The Owls took back the lead in the bottom of the second, answering with an RBI single from Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) and a SAC fly by Lippo to give them a 3-1 lead early. The Bison were able to score one run in the sixth to bring them within one run, before the Owls put the game away.
On the mound:
Steed Outler (Flower Mound, TX) earn his first win on the year, in his second complete game of the year. Pitching all seven innings with and impressive nine strikeouts and only one earned run off four hits. Frank Diaz pitched the complete game for the Bison, allowing 11 hits and two earned runs.
At the plate:
Burns led the Owls with a perfect three hits on three at bats, including an RBI. Nathan Church (Dover Foxcroft, ME) finished the game with two hits along with Tanner Veillieux (Belfast, ME) also finishing with two hits. Lippo, Jones and Burns each earned an RBI. While the Owls finished the game with an impressive zero strikeouts.
Game 2 (7-6 – Bison - 8 innings):
How it happened:
The Owls yet again came out string early, this time with four runs in the first. With two on and two outs, the rally began, Anthony Searels (Middleburg, FL) hit a two RBI single, Steed Outler (Flower Mound, TX) and Ricky Goupille (Presque Isle, ME) each scored a run on an RBI single. The Bison answered with one run themselves in the first as the score sat 4-1. The second inning the Bison answered with a three run inning off three hits to tie the game at four. Staying hot, Gallaudet scored another two runs off three hits in the third inning to take the lead. The owls fought back with an RBI single by Jacob Moreno (Bourne, MA) to bring them within one. It was Moreno who scored in another run with two outs in the top of the seventh, a clutch double brought Nathan Church (Dover Foxcroft, ME) home to tie the game. With the game in extra innings the Bison scored the winning run off an RBI double.
On the mound:
Nicholas Perfitt (Houlton, ME) started the game, pitching the first three innings, striking out five batters and allowing six earned runs and walking four. Kaiden Crowley (Jonesport, ME) pitched for two innings, striking out five and only one walk and one hit. Bailey Corely (Lake Stevens, WA) finished the game, pitching the final 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run.
At the plate:
Lead off Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA) hit an impressive four hit on five at bats while Moreno finished the game prefect with three hits on three at bats and two RBI's. Goupille finished with two hits on four at bats and one RBI.
The Owls will continue their spring trip with a game vs Rutgers-Newark and SUNY Plattsburgh on Monday the 14th.
