Owls Near Comeback vs the Hawks

BRISTOL, RI – The Owls men's basketball team traveled down south to compete against one of the top teams in the northeast. The Owls battled against Roger Williams University, falling short in a second half comeback, losing 76-69. This loss brings the Owls to 1-6 on the year and the Hawks to 6-2.

The Hawks came out to an early lead in the first ten minutes. The Owls would keep the game close early and eventually gain the lead at the 9:30 min mark. Battling back and forth for the next five minutes, followed by a run by RWU to go into the half leading by 16 points. RWU would come out of the half and push the lead up to 23 in the first couple minutes of the half. Led by Gilbert Jean Mendez on the offensive end and the Owls spectacular defense the comeback began with just 10 minutes left in the game. Down 20, the Owls would go on a 13-3 run to bring the game within 11 in just under six minutes to go. Some more back and forth, led to an 11-0 run to bring the game within six in just one minute left. A turnover by the Owls and a score by the Hawks would put the game out of reach late as the Owls comeback fell short.

Gilbert Jean Mendez led the way with 22 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Shooting 9-17 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Kj Minter finished the game with a near double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds on 60% shooting. David Ellington finished the game with his first double digit game, scoring ten points off the bench. The Owls would finish with a season high 14 offensive rebounds as a team.

The Owls will finish off their first semester play with a game vs Lesley University at 1:30PM.
