Owls Beat Moose to Earn First Win of the Year

AUGUSTA, ME – UMPI men's basketball team earns their first win of the 2022-23 season after an 83-76 win over U-Maine System opponent U-Maine at Augusta. This now brings the Owls to 1-3 on the year, on this grind it out victory.

The Owls found themselves in a tight match up early in the first half as the teams went back and forth. It wasn't until a quick run at the six minute mark that pushed the lead up to 12 in the first half. The run would be led by David Ellington's five points off the bench include a three, when the Owls were in need of a deep ball to fall. The Moose battled back and the Owls went into halftime up six points. In the second half it was Gilbert Jean Mendez, reigning North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year, would start the half on a run. Scoring six straight points off back to back And 1's at the rim to push the lead back to double digits. The team would continue to battle before the Moose brought the game within just three points with six minutes to go. Another run by the Owls would bring the game back to double digits as the Owls would hold onto the win.

Griffin Guerrette would lead all scorers in the game, finishing with an impressive double-double, scoring 29 points and grabbing ten rebounds, also shooting 8-10 from the free throw line. Jean Mendez finished with 21 points on 8-15 shooting. It was the Owls defense that led them to the win, as their shooting from deep was lacking, causing 22 turnovers while also scoring forty points in the paint.

The Owls will continue their U-Maine System match ups with a game vs U-Maine at Fort Kent on November 30th.
