Box Score Waterville, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Volleyball Team traveled to Colby College for a 6:00PM game this evening and ran into a solid opponent in the Host Mules. Colby (4-7) handed the Owls (7-6) a 3 to 0 loss at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
The Home Team jumped on UMPI in the first set gaining a quick 9 to 1 lead and winning handily by a 25 to 8 score. Colby then went on to take Set number two 25 to 12 before a very competitive 3rd set in which the Mules won 25 to 22 after a 21 to 21 deadlock minutes earlier. Colby boasted a roster with eight players standing between 5'10" and 6'1" and their height advantage was evident in the number of kills accomplished during the match. The Mules recorded 42 kills to the Owls 11.
Miranda Washinawatok (So. Shawano, WI) had 4 kills for UMPI along with 3 digs. Maddi Thweatt (So. Middleton, ID) had 6 digs to lead ME-Presque Isle, while Devine Hoskie (Jr. Shonto, AZ) had 2 kills and 4 digs. Setter Laura Aroz (Jr. Tucson, AZ) had 8 assists along with 3 digs.
Colby was led by 5'11" senior outside hitter Paige Hanssen with 20 kills on the night. Hanssen leads the NESCAC with 146 total kills on the season. Senior setter Molly Mauel notched a game high 30 assists while Erin Maidman had 9 digs.
Next up: UMPI travels to Wenham, Massachusetts for 2 matches tomorrow against Rivier University at 12:00PM and against the Host Gordon College Fighting Scots at 2:00PM.
