Long Day of Softball Ends in a Split for the Owls

Presque Isle, ME – The Owls took on Southern Virginia University (SVU) in an electrifying double header. Game one went ten innings as the Owls loss a close one 8-7, but come back strong winning the second game 9-4.

UMPI put it on early coming out with a 3-0 lead at the end of the first. Runs coming from Alissa Edwards (Nebraska City, NE) off an error by the Knights, Marissa Reagle (Seattle, WA) off a Sara Packard (St. Albans, ME) single, and pinch runner Haley Davenport (Chicago, IL) off another Knights error.

The Owls continued their scoring in the second inning as another Knights error allowed Reagle to score yet again.  Packard earned another RBI as her single to center field allowed Delanie Strout (Greene, ME) to score, making it 5-0 Owls.

After being scoreless in the first two, SVU scored two runs in the bottom of the third. Runs coming from a single by Megan Harmon and a sacrifice fly by Tara Hilton; making the score 5-2 still in the Owls favor.  A wild pitch in the fourth allowed Terry to add another one for UMPI, while Bethanie Hudson homers for the Knights to bring the score to 6-3.

SVU began their comeback in the fifth as they scored three runs. Madison Rigby's double brought in one run while Hilton hit a two run homer to tie the game 6-6. Both teams stay scoreless until the ninth inning, as the Owls catcher, Strout, scores off an error by the Knights. SVU responds with a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie it at seven. The Knights finally ended game one off a Hilton single to bring Rigby home in the tenth inning, final score 7-8.

Game two scoring started quickly as SVU's Heather Terranova hit a three run homerun. From that point on it was all UMPI.  In the third, Emily Page (Lincoln, ME) scored off a Reagle sacrifice fly to get the Owls started. Three more runs in the fourth allowed the Owls to take the lead. Davenport scored off an error, while Roni Shaw (Payette, ID) and Packard score off fielder choice bringing the score to 4-3.

UMPI continued to pour on the runs in the fifth and sixth. Terry's double brought Edwards home, along with Anaiz Diaz's (Tampa, FL) single which allowed Terry to bring the score to 6-3.  Page would hit her first career homer to left center field in the sixth. Nicole Marucci (Naples, ME) and Reagle would score as well in the inning off an error and a fielder's choice. 9-3 Owls lead.

The Knights would score one more in the seventh before the Owls finish the game with a 9-4 win.  Packard received the win on the mound as she pitched all seven innings with only allowing eight hits.

The Owls continue their road trip tomorrow, Saturday, March 17th in a double header against New Rochelle. Games are at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
