Owls split a high scoring doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Aston, PA – Owls go 1-1 on day two of their spring road trip vs. Penn State Brandywine.  Brandywine wins 8-0 in the first game, while UMPI came back strong with a 14-10 victory in the second game.

The scoring started early as Brandywine took a 1-0 lead in the first off a single by Rachel Cherubini. Two more runs came in the second off a double by Ashley Dotey, and a two RBI single by Cherubini.

As the Owls continued their scoring drought, Brandywine scored two more in the third off a couple of base hits stretching the score to 6-0. Julie Foeldes toped off Bandywine's scoring with a two run homer in the bottom of the fourth.  Katie DeStefano gets the win on the mound in a complete game for Brandywine.

The second game started in a similar fashion as Brandywine took a 4-0 lead after two innings.  An RBI single started the scoring followed by a wild pitch, groundout, and a double each bringing in a run.  UMPI then picked up their offensive energy in the third.

With the bases loaded, Roni Shaw (Payette, ID) singled to left field bringing Marissa Reagle (Seattle, WA) home.  Back to back wild pitches by DeStefano allowed Delanie Strout (Greene, ME) and pinch runner Hailey Davenport (Chicago, IL) to score making it 3-4.  A throwing error on Sara Packard's (St. Albans, ME) at bat allowed Shaw to tie the game 4-4.

Continuing the scoring, UMPI took control of the game with an explosive fourth. Taking advantage of Branywine's mistakes, Jackie Peers (Limestone, ME) and Shaw scored off a wild pitch, while Reagle adds a run off a throwing error.  A sacrifice fly by Melanee Terry (Moreno Vallet, CA) scored Alissa Edwards (Nebraska City, ME) and a single by Anaiz Diaz (Tampa, FL) allowed Packard to top off the fourth inning rally, giving the Owls to a 10-4 lead.

A strong fifth inning stretched the lead for the owls. Edwards scored off a Strout ground out to start the inning. Terry then smashed a two run homer to left field bring the score to 13-4. After hitting a double, Shaw's smart base running brought her to third and allowed her to score off of another wild pitch, 14-4.

Owls held onto the lead despite a late fifth inning rally, after a double by Nikki Velez, Arianna Segich hit a triple bringing in three runs. Another couple runs brought the score to 14-10 before the Owls ended the high scoring game.  Packard earns her second win of the year as she pitched four of the five innings.

The Owls continue their spring road trip on Wednesday the 14th against Mary Baldwin. The double-header starts are at 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
