Owls Win 2 out of 3 on Opening Weekend

Medford, MA -  The Owls Women's Basketball Team got off to a great start over Veteran's Day weekend winning two of their three games on the road when they put together a very solid Team effort in a 78 to 53 win over Lesley University on Monday afternoon.

UMPI (2-1), jumped out to an early lead in the 1st quarter with an uptempo game and contributions from several players offensively while playing an aggressive man to man defense and keeping the Lynx (0-1) to only 7 points in the first 10 minutes of play. Marissa Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) scored 7 points and dished out 4 assists in the opening quarter, Hunter Mercier (Fr. Fairfield, ME) scored 5 points including a deep 3 pointer and Rhylee Wright (Jr. Frenchville, ME) sparked the club with 8 points and 6 rebounds in getting the Owls off to a fast start. 

The 6'1" center Wright continued her outstanding play in the 2nd quarter scoring 9 points and grabbing 5 more boards and guard Emmy Churchill (Jr. Washburn, ME) contributed 5 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds in the quarter as the Owls moved out to a 43 to 21 lead at the half.

The 2nd half saw the Lynx make three different runs closing the gap, but each time UMaine-PI would come back with a run of their own to get the lead back up to a 20 point margin. Lesley outscored the Owls 16 to 14 in the 3rd period but UMPI kept their distance outscoring the Lynx 21 to 16 in the final quarter of play.

Wright, despite some 2nd half foul trouble, finished the game with 28 points and a game high 16 rebounds. Guard Marissa Reagle had an outstanding all-around game with 9 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Kendra Silvers (Jr. North Berwick, ME) played excellent defense for UMPI and added 7 points and 8 rebounds to the win. Mercier scored 11 points and recorded 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists and Sara Mussleman (Turlock, CA) added 7 points. UMPI received excellent play off the bench from Ines Ngoga, Laura Aroz and Abby Parks.

Guard Theresa Pereira had a team high 18 points for Lesley University and Dakota Jones had 13 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in an outstanding effort on the afternoon.

Next up: The Owls will play at Elm's College in Chicopee, MA on Sunday November 18th at 1:00PM.
